Switching Contracts

Okay, so I thought I received some good news but after further consideration, I am questioning that.

I want to be an air contract and I’ve made that clear. I have passed my ASTB and just recently completed my flight physical. The problem is my flight physical could take some time to process, but it should be back in time for the November board.

My recruiter suggested that I go ahead and sign a ground contract and make a program change when all my flight physical information comes through. If I don’t sign the ground contract, there is a chance I will not make the January OCC class. I will join regardless but I want to fly!!!! Is switching contracts really that easy? He makes it seem like it’s a simple and easy process.

I’m a little concerned that it’s somewhat difficult to make that transition. Does my recruiter have a quota he is trying to reach or he is really looking out for my best interest.

He wants me to sign soon and I would appreciate any insight and thoughts any of you may have..

All good things are worth waiting for.

Your recruiter is as interested in your best interests as you are in his.

If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Remember these...they will come up again.

Are program changes that easy? Yes they are.
He could be planning on contacting you early based on his schedule , get the massive paperwork out of the way now and do a quick program change later.

Yes he has certain 'quotas' for each program, but typically ground is the easiest to fill. Just guessing here, that is not the case.

I would specifically ask, why now and why not wait. It's your life and you need to control it. Also, ask yourself and your oso how competitive you are.

I did just what your OSO is trying to get you to do back in 2008/2009. I had a tight turn between getting my flight physical in December and then showing up to OCC in January. So I went to Quantico on a ground contract that was updated to an air contract as soon as the flight physical paperwork went through (which happened at some point 1/2 way through). I wasn't the only guy in the same situation.

So it's not unheard of, and it worked out for me just fine. However, YMMV.

Just out of curiosity, any idea what happened with the other guys in the same situation?

Don’t sign anything with the hopes of switching it later on down the road if there is the option to delay a little bit to get exactly what you want. The Marine Corps doesn’t care about anyone’s personal desires unless it lines up with their objectives... you’re just a value on an Excel spreadsheet somewhere in Quantico. You may not realize it now but big Marine Corps is not your friend, it is a counter party in a legal contract. Get what you want and do things right the first time. If anything, you can’t put a price on peace of mind and sleeping well.
