I think we’ve been over this before. It’s perfectly acceptable to use either a or an in this context. To correct someone for using a is always a douche move.

There's no hard style rule with a or an. It comes down to if the following noun sounds like a consonant of a vowel.................so it's what ever sounds right when read out loud

And "an historic" sounds pompous and faux-British as all hell . . . but I repeat myself. So it obviously doesn't "sound right." Q. E. D.

Stupid ???: I am an enlisted intel rate and was approved for designation as NAO after meeting the requirements. Is that something we place it in our signature block e.g (IW/NAO)? I've seen other sailors do it and the instruction doesn't seem to say yes or no...I feel like it's murky because it seemed to be originally an officer designation. I don't know how much it really matters or if anyone even cares but I'm curious what the consensus is. Thanks!

NAO is an anachronism, and let’s be honest, you went through the trouble for vanity’s sake, not because of any professional requirement. Putting it after your AW or IW would be looked upon with skepticism. So, to answer your question, yes, it’s stupid.

It’s not just an Officer designation, there is an NEC (a NEC?) associated with the qualifications.

If you got the NAO because you needed it to do your job, and actually flew in the course of doing it, then add it in there. If you got it because you are trying to beef up an Eval (like all of my ABE’s getting their EIWS pins) then you’ll get the same side-eye they do when they list (AW/SW/IW) behind their name.

It’s just a PQS anymore and doesn’t actually demonstrate anything other than your ability to waste your free time to meet another artificial wicket to claw to the top of the EP heap on the way to Chief.

Up to you man, I still wear my Aircrew Wings...but I earned them...

Was just reading up on NFO jobs and saw that you can end up being a yellow-shirt catapult officer on a carrier.

I had always thought that NFOs spent most of their time in designated aircraft. Do they do stuff like operating catapults during down time or what? Just curious about what all the possibilities are.

If you ask a question in "stupid questions" than it's a stupid question, but if you say it's a stupid question, then it's not a stupid question, and you demand the answer you were hoping for? Quite the catch 22.........that's quite the catch......the best.
