Who did you play for/when?

BU...no not the good one - Bentley University. 2007-2011. Could have gone and played in the CHL/ECHL/Europe but was too burnt out for minor pro hockey. You were a ref, you know the grind it can be...figured I would start a new challenge. Actually putting together an application to try for the Marines if the Navy doesn't like me. What leagues did you ref?

Yeah, there is a lot of daily grind bs in minor pro. There is a reason I left it for this stuff. I worked a lot of different leagues in my tenure in hockey; AJHL, MetJHL, MJHL, UMWEHL, NAHL, USHL, SPHL, CHL, ECHL, and I had a cup of coffee in the AHL for a season and worked a few NHL training camp games. I worked some college too, I was a fill in guy for the WCHA and CCHA if someone got hurt. Didn't get the call too often when I wasn't working for some other league already- but I did get an Alaska trip out of the WCHA in January. If you get the chance effing pass on it. Alaska is terrible in the middle of winter. There are a couple in there that I am forgetting. I wasn't really good enough for the highest levels- I had trouble with my consistency from night to night as the leagues went up- and I definitely did not want to be a career minor league guy, that lifestyle sucks ass. So here I am.

Good luck to you- Maybe the Navy will pass on you and you'll realize you should go Marine in the first place!

Nice stats...its crazy how valuable doing pullups is for the Marine package. When is the deadline for the January class applications?

First week of November is the board. I have my flight physical at the end of September, so we will see. I am working on getting the pull ups up and mile time down. I have to take the PFT within 30 days of the board so I have a little time to get them up.

Interesting. Just curious, how do you measure pull-ups? Just, total number you can do on the bar in a given time span? Does hand position matter? Is kipping allowed?

Hand position does not matter, what ever works be for you. You need to fully extend your arms at the bottom of the rep. Kipping is not allowed.

Hair Warriors?

Starting position is at a dead hang. The Marine/counter holding the clipboard will tell you to start. You may not kick, kip, or bicycle to the bar. You may not touch the supporting bars or the ground at any time. One rep consists of your chin clearing the bar completely (just touching it doesn't count if your counter is really anal), and then you coming back down to the starting position. If you kick, kip, or bicycle they will tell you that it does not count. You'll get two warnings if you do so (you'll hear your last actual rep repeated out loud). On the third violation you'll be told that you are done and must dismount the bar. Touching the side bars or ground will not grant you a warning; those are immediate enders.

Pull ups (palms away from you/overhand grip) and chin ups (palms facing you/underhand grip) are the only two grips allowed, so no mixed grips. If your counter is really cool, they'll check the tape on the bar, if there is any, and make sure it's not old/rolled/soiled. (The reason I added this sentence is because a couple years back some complete tool decided to tape razor blades on the pull up bars. Some super-moto Marines just jumped up to knock out some PT and severed tendons/blood vessels. Now, the S-3 guys inspect the hell out of pull up bars prior to PFTs.) If there is no tape, it is not required, so pullups after wet conditions are not ideal. Don't try and show up with chalk (yes, Marines have tried that), and to be completely honest, rubbing your hands with dirt is not just frowned upon, it is actually detrimental.

You and I are pretty evenly stacked up. I'm going to take the ASTB again soon but we have identical scores as well as GPA for the same reason. I also have a couple of O3 and O5 LORs, both Air Force, and my long time boss and professor. I'm hopeful, but being realistic, I'm thinking I'll have to test again for an immediate reapply. I know I could've done better. Keep me posted on your status and good luck!
