I have a strong motivational statement, but I met with my OR today and he said my GPA made me uncompetitive (I would agree it is low) and that GPAs < ~2.7 are usually not even looked at. He said I should use my motivational statement to explain my low GPA (I was premed for 2.5 years when I started college and decided it wasn't for me; still not an excuse to have a GPA that low though). 1) Should I use my motivational statement to explain my low GPA? It doesn't really fit into my current motivational statement and 2) Any input about low GPAs would be greatly appreciated.

Getting my package together for the next possible board.

25/M 1st SNA 2nd SNFO 3rd AMDO

Volunteer for First robotics competition (mentoring High School kids) 4hrs/wk for 2 months
Omega Delta Phi Fraternity: Internal VP and Fund raising chair for 1 Year.
Loads of scholarships in school
Multiple awards from current job.
Captained a city league Ultimate Frisbee team and play on Club team out of HI.

I have wanted to be a Naval Aviator since I was old enough to know what it was. I grew up on stories about naval aviation from my grandfather, who was a WWII ace naval aviator. Hope I get to see my childhood dream come true.

NROTC Applicant (Advanced Standing, non-Scholarship):

Major: Political Science

GPA: 3.0
ASTB: 6/7/6 54
PRT: EH

Applying for: SNA, NFO this Fall

-Anyone have thoughts on this package? I have time to take the ASTB again, but many question why I would want to since I have the highest score out of my class at my Unit (only 2 others wanting aviation). Most seem to think my package is "good enough, you'll be fine" but that doesn't ease any of the butterflies when you're the type of person that feels like you could always squeeze a little more out there, shave off slightly better performance here no matter what.

Applying: SNA and NFO. I was a SNA non-select from Oct 2010 boards.
GPA:3.01 Criminal justice/pre-law.
ASTB: 6/7/6 52

LoR's: two O-6's active duty,
a O-3 retired,
four supervisors from work.

Interview with Captain Leary, CO of NROTC at Embry Riddle-which in my opinion could not have gone better.
Five years work experience in private security field in a supervisory position with strong leadership roles, to put myself through school.
Volunteer work with local police department.
ROTC in high-school.
12 hours in a PA-28.
Strong motivational statement. Father was a Naval Aviator, want to fight terrorists.

Wake: Captain Leary thought I was a pretty good candidate, and ours are almost identical.

Thanks for the feedback ncap, it's always good to get an outside perspective. At my NROTC unit you can never get straight feedback, its always 'do better' no matter where you stand. I understand the mentality and that's always the goal, but it doesn't ease the nerves. Sometimes it's just hard to wait!

Guess the best we can do is cross our fingers and hope we both arrive in Pcola ready to start the rigors of flight school. :icon_smil Good luck!

Applying SNA
25/M
3.54 GPA, Major: Communications, Minor: Psychology
ASTB: 6/7/7/54

LORs: 2 Professors, 1 Priest
Volunteer: A couple different things
Clubs: 2 clubs in college, one of which I was president
Athletics: 4 years of D1 Ice Hockey - this is what I am banking on to give me some extra street cred! Given that my scores/package seem lacking compared to others on here.

Motivational statement - ehhh I dont know. Reaching an elite level athletically has taught me the importance of teamwork, dedication, and strong leadership - and how I can apply this to a career in the Navy.

Other than that - I just had LASIK done a month ago and logged very minimal flight time but the board does not know of either since they happened after my package was submitted. Been praying a whole bunch too but again, the board doesn't know about it. All they will know is that my mediocre package seems somewhat amazing and will pro-rec me for no good reason!

This question is wayyy too late but I'll ask for peace of mind:

Where did we all put all these extra-curriculars such as volunteer work and clubs and sports, other than the designated two spaces in block 14. Block 15 is 'Applicant Remarks'....did you all just fill that in with the other things you have done?

Use box 15 to put all your extra stuff. That's what my OR told me to do.
