STA-21 Age Requirements

How do you know how many applied for each option? They don't release those numbers, only the total number of applicants.

My skipper sat the board for the Nukes this year.. He went and talked to the Aviation and they stated the 38 people applied... They needed 20 selects and and 1/5 of the number of selects for alternates.. which would be 4.... so out of 38 applicants.. that's an over 50% select rate. Now how many people do you think applied for pilot (most people think its the most glamorous)? Alot more than the selection rate suggests... So... That and the fact that I'm 27 already with very little transferrable college that I applied for NFO.

naaa not for pilot.. just for FO...as I was the only applicant from my command, the skipper took a vested interest into my situation...

I was the only one to apply from my command too EM1. And since we were both recruiting i think it had alot to do with it... and on top of that us getting selected looks good on the skippers fitrep... he gave me 2 weeks to do nothing but sit at district and touch up my package...

I'm a Nuke as well, I was also the only NFO applicant at my command (Prototype and Power School combined). I'm also 27 hence the application for NFO, I need the extra time to complete my degree, my college has not told me how many of my credits will transfer, but even if 0 do I can still fit it all in prior to my 31st birthday, luckily I have a summer birthday!

A quick question about this phrase in the NFO section of the instruction:"For applicants with prior active duty military service, waivers may be granted on a month-for-month basis up to 48 months for active duty served prior to their 27 birthday, to a maximum age of 31."
What is the adjustment (if any) that would happen with my age? Right now I'm 29 with 6 years on active duty and enlisted in October 2004. I have been getting conflicting answers to that question and I'd like to know what all my options are.

every month you have been in the military gives you one month of waiver time. If you just turned 29, you can receive a maximum of 24 months for your waiver.

No one actually needs a waiver in there package. It is all done automatically. You just need to ensure you can graduate by your 29th birthday, unless you were picked up for an option such as supply that allows you to graduate later.

I just want to comment on this because it confused me.

I'm 24, I was picked up for CORE, and I'll turn 27 before my 36 months are up. While it's true that waivers up to 29 are granted automatically, they're not given automatically. You have to mention it in your initial package, in the CO endorsement. I didn't do this because I of some last minute decision making and misunderstanding. After being accepted, I talked to Mr Straten, he told me I had to finish school by my 27th birthday since I didn't mention needing a waiver in my package. I'll be fine, but it was a little bit of a snag that I hadn't expected because of all the talk about "automatic" waivers. If you request one in your package, it will be granted.

It seems crazy that they won't grant it after the fact! Thanks for sharing; that could really get someone if they were older. I just had a one-sentence blurb at the end of my statement: "In consideration for the NFO program, I respectfully request a waiver for my age (27)."
