A SWO says there is nothing to do in Pensacola, and you guys act surprised...

And here I was, just about to post that Ensign pay is a decent start "by the numbers", but feels qualitatively low because you'll be out having so much fun, plus (depending on your priorities) you'll be buying all your "real world" shit like a car, furniture, etc.

I slept on an air mattress the whole time I lived in P-cola, and dived, fished, and drank my face off. I bought a bed when I started Primary, because sleep is important when you're actually flying for a living.

Is it because ships have no runways to land on? :p I'm yearning for Pensacola right now :(, but first stop is Newport Rhode Island

I haven't read this thread other than seven's post and I fully concur. I paid like $350/mo for a room in a legit 5 br house in Perdido in API. Slept on an air mattress, had like 5 boxes of personal effects to my name, a computer from which I made ridiculous AW posts, etc. Prior to cruise in the fleet, that was the most money I have ever pocketed in my career. I had like 25k in savings by the time I was in primary. Throughout that time, I was going to A-pool muster or gentleman's API hours, and crushing the rest of the day drinking on a floatie in our backyard pool or out on the town on the weekends. If that is not how you live as a new 1390 ENS, you are wrong.

If you think Pensacola sucks, you're not going to like south Texas or most of your potential duty stations.

this. after a year in corpus, when we headed back to pcola for "D-jet" (one of the last scams remaining in the navy id guess), it was like arriving in heaven. Not that corpus was terrible, but as you go other places, you will realize pcola is a pretty cool place in its own way. I say that after having lived in VA beach and San Diego on subsequent tours.

I'm definitely going to be looking for a cheap rent situation like that. That's a lot of money to pocket. Hope you invested it wisely haha. Not sure how you drink like that and don't blow up beyond weight standards. Is there a good gym in Pensacola on base? Or is it better to invest in a membership somewhere?

Yeah ....ummm...the "skeeters"/florabama/skanktank natives.

Don't forget to change your residency to FL while you're there. No state income tax and you can keep it in FL the rest of the time you're in the military. Not to mention the whole car sales tax loophole. I just saved you thousands. You're welcome.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the car sales tax? I live in Florida already, so the income tax thing isn't an issue.

I'm just not sure what you mean about the sales tax loophole.

Military FL residents get a sales tax exemption when registering a car in FL. The only catch is that it only applies when you're stationed out of state and promise not to drive the car in FL for at least 6 months.
