Smartphones the norm?

If 2% of your income, or $70 (.02 * $3500) is going to cause you issues, you might want to reexamine your finances.

But no, you don't need a smart phone. They're nice to have, but not necessary to succeed in flight school.

Not going to cause issues, my finances are just fine. I just hate spending money on things that aren't booze or things that don't shoot. Mabye I should join the real world...I don't want to be an old man at 21. Just curious as to how smartphones workout in flight school. I have a pretty good idea now. Thanks, Sir.

When it's 99 degrees outside and clearance delivery is giving you the business about trying to file or change your flight plan in the chocks and their only acceptable remedy is to shut down and go fix it, you take out your smartphone and file a new flight plan. It shows up at clearance delivery like pure F'ing magic, you get your squawk and leave before a) you die from heat or b) all your avionics die from heat. You also get to the beer a lot faster.

Friend of mine bought a bowflex this way. Didn't realize it until the damn thing showed up on his doorstep.

I clicked on this to see who resurrected a thread about smart phones from 2005.

You'll also someday find a smartphone essential for checking facebook while in the hot pits.

I've bought four firearms this way. Two I didn't even realize I bought until I found the 'Congratulations! You won Gunbroker auction #...' email in my inbox the next day.
I'd drink and eBay... Don't even remember half the shit that I won, I'd wake up with a hangover and wonder why I felt the need to enter a bidding war over a porcelain helicopter salt/pepper shaker...

You don't NEED it anymore than anyone needed it 5 or 10 or 15 years ago. I was a late adopter, and was originally like,"I'm never going to need all that data." I'm on that thing like Whitney Houston on a crack pipe now. It's just very useful.

Thanks for the input from all. I'm going to sleep on the idea for a few nights and put some thought into it. BTW, had to look up what the term "hinge" meant. Glad I could provide you all with some entertainment ;)

Read an article awhile back (too lazy to find it right now) where online retailers did a little research into the purchase times of items that had been returned. For some unknown reason, items purchased between midnight and 2 am get returned the most...

Dude, quit being such a damn cheapass. Unless you owe the Russian Mob some money or something then get the damn phone. Buy an Ipad while you're at it. Between my DROID and my Ipad, I can pretty much study for a brief/flight, have the weather, file the flight plan, jam to some tunes, and have a little time left over to play a game of Angry Birds or two all while sitting AT THE BAR and drinking a beer or 6.

Do you need it? NO. Will you thank us later? Yes. You're welcome (in advance).

Yeah good point on the iPad. Not so much for flight school, but afterwards, when studying for a brief means using different TACSOPs/NATIP/NTTP/What-have-you, it is pretty handy... The other bonus is that the iPad is being used more and more in-flight for different functions.
