Shore Duty

How does the shore duty time work? By the time I leave my second DIVO tour, I will have been commissioned for 4.5 years, so I presumably have 3 years for shore duty before Department Head school. Will I get one shore duty billet for 3 years? Or will I get a shore duty billet for 2 years and then another billet for 1 year? Or will I get sent to DH school after 2 years of shore duty?

Have you talked to your DH about this? Your profile says you're a DIVO... so have you utilized the resources around you?

Don't forget to wear the armor when you talk to your fellow SWOs about this... Some habits die hard...

Every SWO I worked with had 1 shore tour after their 2 sea tours.

Your commands leadership is doing a piss poor job by not explaining the detailing process to you and your peer JOs. This question is a reflection on them more so than a reflection on you.

I can understand if this was an OCS applicant, but not a SWO DIVO.

Not sure why you are asking an aviator forum for career info instead of asking your XO or browsing Pers site for whatever infographic they have available. You could even call or email the post divo shore duty detailer.

Pro tip: If you haven't already figured it out, COs are heavily involved in the officer detailing process. First step of increasing the chances of getting what you want is to discuss it with him at some point and get his buy-in, also include it in block 40 on your Fitrep.

Just to review here, you ARE a Commissioned Officer, already in your Division Officer tour, correct?

I have met SWOs who have had 2 shore duty billets (one of them typically being one year long). Different SWOs have had different shore duty experiences, and forums like this have more people who have gone through the process than the number of Department Heads on a ship.

I see this forum as another means to obtaining answers to the many questions I have and will have as I continue in my Navy career. I rarely come to this site first (as you can tell by my number of posts), but if I believe a question has more than one answer which differs based on individual experience, I consider asking it here. I was clearly wrong with this one, as I'm only getting responses from people who are not SWOs and have not been through the SWO shore duty process.

It's true that this is an Aviation Forum, but I figured the subforum titled "Surface Warfare Officer (SWO)" would be a place where SWOs can discuss topics and ask/answer questions. Apparently I'm wrong on this count too.

And to clarify, I AM a Commissioned Officer in my Division Officer tour.

The best person to give you an answer on how long you, specifically, can expect to spend on shore duty based on your career timing is the detailer.

The best person to answer how many people do split shore duties and how many shore jobs can support 3 year orders is the detailer.
