All I'm saying is that before this controversy, nobody in the south gave a rat's @ss about the confederate flag or even gave it a second thought. The whole "but...it's our heritage" BS is just a poor excuse for a real argument in favor of keeping it around. For the record, I think the flag should be left alone, because the opposition doesn't have a leg to stand on either. I'd just like the b!tching to stop. Is this really the most important thing we can come up with to devote our energy to? Really? If you people are going to insist on non-stop public displays, how about focusing your efforts on something more useful or altruistic. How about a bake sale for the troops? I do loves me some cookies from time to time. :D

I went to school in Vermont, about as liberal as any place can be, and took a course on the Civil War, and the prof taught about the state's rights reason. So no, its not only schools in the South that teach that.

Vermont allows the concealed carry of firearms without a license. This is not as liberal as any place can be. I know, I'm from Massachusetts :) But you're right, I had a good history teacher in high school and he taught states rights... I can't say the same for most people in MA though, that's for sure.

Norwich isnt exactly indicative of Vermont, I'm sure the Prof at Groovy UVy probably had a different spin on things

Well maybe its not the most liberal, but its one of the few places where high schoolers in the Capital city can throw rocks at a woman in a National Guard uniform and not get in trouble.

Methinks they wouldn't even teach a course on that subject at Groovy UVy. ;)

Huey, i never meant to imply that our current military was any less rough and tough, just that society and politicians in general are. I think it is an impossibility to be in the business of warfare and not be rough and tough. But when people start suing coffee shops because they burned their tongue on hot coffee or we must limit our freedom of speech because a certain term may be offensive to some or very few people can wrap their head around the concept of personal responsibility, then we have a problem.
Just my $.02. Maybe my viewpoint is skewed because I'm a conservative trapped in the People's Democratic Republic of Kalifornia.
