Not professional, and not what a U.S. pilot would be expected to do in that situation. That said, while it's proper to lodge a formal complaint/demarche/etc for the purposes of respecting standards of behavior during these interactions, it's not worth getting anyone's panties in a knot. There's a fine line between publically expecting professional interactions... and whining - particularly when it goes on in the press.
Good way to run into the plane you are intercepting and get yourself killed. It wouldn't be the first time a Russian Flamker has bumped into a P-3 though, a Norwegian P-3 got a piece of a Flanker's tail with one of its props back in 1987.
