So applied science & technology wouldn't be? I saw where it says some are preferred but not required. Do they look at the courses on the transcript taken to determine?

tech is generally defined as having taken a year of calc and calc based physics.

It may say preferred but the ones they take that are considered non tech often have a minor in math and physics.

They have a goal of 60/40 of tech/non tech, and that usually ends up being tech is IP and CWO with non tech picked for Intel

Hi! Question: I’m currently an Army Officer (O2) and my time in the army ends next year by which time I’ll be an O3. I have a very strong desire to fly for the Navy but I am uncertain how that would look. I’ve passed all the initial screening for the Army as my dream was to fly for them (unfortunately I had a few poor semesters in college that kept me from receiving my branch of choice). I’m waiting to hear back from a recruiter but I’m trying to “cast the net wide” and do my due diligence

That being said, I’m looking for insight on any of the following:

1) How would the pathway(s) from where I’m at now, to API look?

Would I essentially need to get out of the Army and then enter the Navy? I’ve looked at inter service transfers but I’m doubtful that would apply in this case since my interest is in a field I have no Army experience in.

2) Would I need to go to OCS in RI given that I’ll have been commissioned for 4 years at that point?

3) If I began over again at O1, would I be subject to the same promotion timeline as my peers at that point or is it possible to play “catch-up?” - main reason for asking is just trying to build a picture of what finances would look like as well.
Any and all information would be appreciated as I’ve been sifting through the Navy’s way of doing things trying to break out of my Army understanding of the way things work. Cheers.

You will not go to OCS. It will be some sort of interservice transfer of your Army commission. There are guys here with more info and some experience in this matter. After 4 years commissioned in another branch seems like a couple bad semester in college shouldn't be a major impediment to a transfer to aviation. If you did shit the bed in college and the Army is still holding it against you, the Navy might as well. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. I ultimately graduated with a 3.2 but it wasn’t good enough for Active Duty Aviation in the Army. That’s good to hear about OCS, I was hoping for that. My underlying stupid/optimistic question is, would I retain my pay grade? I highly doubt they’d send me to API as an O-3…

You would not be the first. The Coast Guard routinely sends fleet-experienced O-3’s to flight school. Many qualified SWO’s have been selected to transfer to aviation as well.

One of my FRS sim instructors was a West Point graduate and huey pilot for several years before switching over to Naval Aviation. Despite being an (Army) winged aviator, they still sent him through the entire aviation syllabus including API. He said it was the best 2 years of his career, considering there’s nothing like learning to fly again after you already know how to fly, barring of course the nuances between the branches and how they do business. He went on to become a skipper on the Navy side. Obviously you lack the flight experience that he had, but I don’t think your rank would be an issue; however I’ll delegate that to people more knowledgeable.

@wink is correct it would be an IST, don't waste time with a recruiter as the program authorization now specifically prohibits recruiters from working with commissioned officers for aviation programs.

You’ll certainly go through API if you’re a new aviator. That’s where you get all your basic water survival training.
Of course! I think the emphasis was placed more on the rank than attending API. I meant would they have me start over as an ENS in API or would I be able to go through as an O3 and keep my pay grade from the army?

Thank you. I was hopeful that would be the case (IST). But if not them, then who? I’ve read the Army reg on ISTs but who could I talk to on the Navy side about transitioning to aviation?

google "navy aviation officer community manager" and call them, I have directed several that direction and so far no one was successful that I sent that way, but I know there are a few that were from discussions here.
