While you can build a more powerful computer, the fact of the matter is, a console game will be consistent. It will work, and it will look like it was designed to look. This is not the case with PC games. Run it on something not up to the highest specs, and you lose graphical capabilities, speed, etc etc.

That was my point about console systems. They are often times more powerful than your average or even graphics intensive PC and are capable of much higher and more stable graphics than even a "gamer's" PC.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong. So many people are comparing the three, saying that "PS3/Wii/XBox360 is going to bomb, your an idiot for buying it", which I think is dumb. Xbox, PS2, and GameCube coexisted for quite some time, all with great games. None of the new 3 is going to go anywhere for a while. One may sell more than the other, one may have better games, etc. But all will have great games which are alot of fun to play. Even if BluRay flops, games will still come out on BluRay. Not like your going to stick your PS3 games into your DVD players anyways...

My biggest gripe is that the PS3 is far too expensive. They all are a bit steep if you ask me though, $400 for an Xbox360 is still alot, even compared to PS3s $600. Plus accesories and $60 games... I mean, you need almost a cool grand to really get going on any of them. (cuz lets be honest, ~$500 to play one game, with one controller, is a glorious waste of money)

This time there is more at risk. When PS2, XBox, and GameCube came out, the capabilities were relatively the same as far as graphics and whatnot. It's not the case anymore.

Wii: Sub-par graphics when compared to other Next Generation systems. However, the unique human-console interaction is the selling point for this system.

XBox 360: Next Generation graphics, Halo, excellent online system, relatively expensive.

PS3: Next Generation graphics, large following from PS2, unproven online system, prohibitively expensive.

I agree, they were all once on equal footing, and now each has their own niche they fill (and yes, one or two may decide the direction of the NEXT Gen systems like Xbox and PS2 did). But I still side with the fact that all will still have a descent backing, and neither Nintendo, Sony, nor Microsoft is going to just "throw in the towel" with any of their systems after what they spent to release them. I mean, MS came out with the HDDVD addon just in time for the release of the PS3, I can see all of them competing like this for a little while, which is good, except maybe the Wii, I think it will sell well enough but will never be a real powerhouse.. Stiff competition is good motivation to make things better for the consumer.
I bet Sony is, right now, looking for ways to make the production of the PS3 cheaper so that they can get the $600 price tag down to compete with the 360. If not, they're friggin' idiots.

Edit: Yes, one could argue that they are all on different formats, and therefore it will be more expsensive to release say, the next Splinter Cell, on all 3 systems. In this sense I think Xbox has the upper hand, since its already established in the market.

Not entirely true. Sony has stated that if PS3 is a failure, they're done.

I'll be curious to see what happens here. Nintendo's GameCube wasn't a huge success compared to XBox or PS2. If the interface works nicely though, I think Wii could be a big one once it catches on.

Sony stated earlier this year that the price was set high on purpose because they wanted it to be purchased by the "elite" or some sh!t. Read it on IGN or GameSpot, can't remember which.

yeah, I read that Sony was going to call it quits too if it fails, but what does "failure" of a system entail? Besides, I took that to mean that they weren't going to make a PS4, not pull the plug on the PS3 alltogether if its sales lag a bit.

Also, I never heard about that "elitist" stuff. I did hear some word that it was set so high due to high initial-production costs of BluRay technology (same woes they seem to be having with their BR-DVD players), among other over the top technologies included. Its pretty interesting that Sony would pull a stunt like that. Gamers tend to not care about brand names but more for cost effective performance.

There needs to be a third option-- the nintendo wii thing. I was looking that thing over, and it would be totally awesome... if only it had a star wars game. The controls would be pretty sweet for light saber fighting. That might be even better than reading the books:D

I'd say that's just a matter of time. Red Steel, Zelda, and I hear one other game already does the controller = sword thing.

So what's with the jump in price these days? Is this a sign of inflation? I haven't really been keeping up with that sort of stuff, but i remember a game console over ~$250 at launch was considered ridonkulous.

Black Friday

So after waiting 2 hours outside of Best Buy this morning to get a 22'' Wide Screen Flat Panel LCD for 200$ for my room back at school, I said what the hey, and went and bought the XBox 360 to go along with it.

360 + HD monitor = sweet

There go my grades.

^If you're worried about grades, then stay the hell away from 'Gears of War' and 'Rainbow Six: Vegas'.

Having tooled around with the NBA game on the PS3, I can't say that I'm all that impressed. Maybe it's not the best example of the systems capabilities, but I'll be waiting a while to buy the thing. I'm pretty sure that my 360 will tide me over. Besides, I'll be in Iraq next year, and the only beneficiary of a PS3 would be the (soon to be) wife.

^ Thanks for the warning, haven't had a chance to check those two games out.

I bought Ghost Recon for the 360, and is a really good demonstration of what the system is capable of, not to mention the multi-player features are pretty indepth as well.

As far as the price wars go:

$399 for the PRO package. (wireless controllers are definitly worth it, as well as the Hard Drive, as buying those two seperately would add $150 to the basic package which is $299).

$50 for second wireless controller.
$50 for Madden 07
$50 for Ghost Recon.

Overall about $550-600 for a decent start.

How are RB 6 Vegas and Gears of War? Good single player and multiplayer? I am trying to convince the rest of my JO cadre to get those games for our next at sea period (also trying to convince my wife to let me buy them) since we have 4 linked 360s. Thanks

RB 6 has a great multiplayer provided you dont play it like Halo. Your a lot more likely to find your fellow military friends to have some understanding of the whole use of menuver and team work vice charge the enemy with a shotgun and then corpse hump him.

Gears of War I havent had a chance to play multi but single is awesome.

RB 6 on multiplayer is pretty freaking great. But, like Lawman said, you don't want to play it like Halo if you want the full effect.

Gears of War is equally fun, but it's kind of the opposite: You almost have to play it like Halo, if that makes sense. I will say that system link is a better idea for this game that split screen, as the visuals are so detailed that you can get distracted watching the other guy play.
