Isn't that what Microsoft did with the X-Box?

The first couple of months yes, but it was willing to accept those costs as part of developing "the upstart." Sony has said they will not continue to fund development of any system beyond the PS3 or future development of the PS3 if it does not make the money they expect from it. So its a differnt starting situation for both companies.

PS2 was profitable... but DVD had already been around for a few years. In time, production costs will come down.

What about durability? Since the Blu-Ray discs hold more information, are they more finnicky if they get scratched?

Honestly, I don't understand how people scratch DVDs and CDs. Start taking care of your stuff and it won't get damaged. Every one of my DVDs is in perfect condition. I don't let them lay out of their cases or whatnot.

Like Godspeed said, Wii has Zelda. And why pay 600 for a game console? I bought a Wii and love it. Having tons of friends over and playin golf, boxing. My girlfriend makes fun of me when I play though and people look pretty dumb when they're swingin that controller like a club. Much better than any system I've ever owned though.

Have a 360 too and Wii is ten times better. Will only use 360 for live.

For a sailor underway, PSP is the best option due to having multiple features such as gaming, pictures, music, videos (through the mem stick or UMD), internet connectivity (take it with you on liberty and log-on), and other functionality (porting old arcade games, Nintendo and Sega games, etc).

As for the question at hand, I would say the XBox 360 would be my choice for a couple reasons:

1) Costs less than PS3 with basically the same graphics (at the moment).

2) Games are more prevelant and many games are the same used on computers (Oblivion, Knights of the Old Republic, etc).

3) Windows Vista will have connectivity to XBox Live, so it has the best cross platform capability (more friends to frag and chat with).

But you could see that as a ding against XBox. Why get something on the XBox when you can run it MUCH better on a PC? And pretty much everyone has to own a PC anyway...and then you get PC exclusives.

Speaking of having X box on the boat.

How to pilots especially, or anyone for the matter, get all their **** on the boat. I hear about how all of you guys have lawn chairs, x boxes, ect... Since you fly to the carrier, do you just drop your stuff off somewhere and they throw it all in your room? Is there a limit on how much you can bring?

Some people enjoy using a console, but the best part of this relationship is the cross functionality it will have and could have. In addition, $300 is cheaper than a really good gaming computer. As a ding on the PS3, if I'm going to spend $600 for a game machine, I'd much rather get a computer than a console.

I admit I enjoy Halo, but I personally will go with the PS3 for my extensive PS2 library, as well as titles like Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo HD, Ace Combat, SOCOM, Final Fantasy, and others which won't make it on 360. Grand Theft Auto games used to be PS2 only for the first year, but 4 will be a non issue though as it's coming out for 360 at the same time.

You didn't read what I wrote. How dare you! ;)

Unfortunately, for you and many other PS2 fans, PS3 is currently NOT backwards compatible. If Sony doesn't fix this, I believe it will be the death of Playstation.

I don't know where you are getting your info from, but they have said from the start that PS3 is backwards compatible with PSX and PS2 games. They have had some initial glitches in the Japan release, and IGN.com reported some glitches but they expect to fix them with a firmware update.

Hmm, interesting. I can't remember where I read it, maybe Penny Arcade, not sure. I just remember the big deal being severe problems with PS3 backwards compatibility. I read this a few days ago. I'll look again, could be wrong (hope I am for Sony's sake).
