It's getting to be that time of year when the Spring semester lets out, so I am trying to compile an end-all-be-all gouge for getting settled in.

If you have some new information, please post in this thread. I will put your info into this one post and delete your reply.

NASP = NAS Pensacola
NASWF = NAS Whiting Field

Whenever you get here (whatever day of the week):

Get your orders stamped at the quarterdeck of NASC (Naval Aviation Schools Command), Building 633. It's in the front of the building.

You can get setup at the BOQ if you so desire. The cost for transient housing is $15/day, NO REIMBURSEMENT. Transient housing is where you will stay until you:
1) Find a place off base.
2) Get moved into "permanent party housing".

SNA's
If you do decide to live off base, you will be required to get a form at the BOQ saying there is no immediate permant party housing. This is what PSD needs to keep paying you BAH (housing $$). Otherwise they take it away.

CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE ON NASP. NASWF is a different story.

If you are going to stay on NASP while you are here, you will get one month BAH after you've been here 30 days. On the Friday you check-in you will have to go to PSD and hear what I just told you.

If you are married/have kids, you should have follow-on orders to NASWF. Since I am not in this boat, I can only voice what I've heard. I believe you are PCS'd to NASWF and have TAD orders to NASP. Most people I've talked to live either 1/2 way to NASWF, or have their family at NASWF and stay in the Q here. I will have to get the real scoop.

Even though I'm married, my wife is stationed in Germany. Therefore I have no dependents (married service members cannot be dependents), so I live in the BOQ. It took less than a week to move from 'transient housing' to 'permanent party housing'.

SNFO's

Again, you are eligible to live on base. If you have a wife (non-military), you are eligible for a 2 bedroom, and if you have children it could be a 3+ bedroom.

Some of the Officer Housing is really old some is near-new. You have to get on a wait list, which you can do once you show up. Keep checking on the wait-list, it goes much faster than you would think. Hound them, but be nice about it. Basically, just go talk to the guy, be very nice, and make sure he knows your face.

You will be here a while, so make the best of it!

/SNFO's

Friday morning. Meet BEHIND bldg 633. 0730. Blues (Whites in season). You will recieve all your indoc info after that. The phone number to Flight Management is 850-452-3342 in case you have any questions. They will be who you hear from during your time in A-pool. They're a bunch of stash Ensigns too, so they can answer most or all of your questions.

Things to be accomplished before API (you will have weeks to get this done):
PRT screen
Swim screen
flight physical <- you will do it again PERIOD.
BOLTC (basic officer leadership training course, aka "sea story week")
FAA physical if you don't already have one.
IFS if you're an SNA
helmet fit check
misc items

M,W,F you will muster @ 0730, building 633. PT @ gym. Remember to check out at 0900.
T, khakis
H, khakis in the auditorium
The rest of your day after 0800 (except for PT) is free. Weekends are free. I'm banging my head against a wall trying to keep occupied.

Be prepared to "hang around" for a couple of weeks until you get your ducks in a row.

SNFO's will wait, and most likely get a stash job because they are currently moving you through the pipeline at a rate of 5 per API class. This can change.

Great gouge! How long did it take you to get into housing? If you aren't terribly pickey whether you get old or new can it move faster?
