East Hill, North Hill and Government Street/Seville Square are all areas that Students from Whiting have lived... They even got jets.

I can honestly say I've never once wished I'd lived in Pensacola during advanced - especially when you get 5:15 briefs and in reality, you've gotta get there 45 mins early to do your weight and balance and put your briefing items on the board, print the weather, etc. Waking up for a 5:15 brief = getting up at 3:45 in Milton... gotta be more like 2:45 in Pensacola. I wouldn't want to do that.

...and that doesn't include the extra time you would need if you hit every fucking stop light on Hwy 90 and 89 on the way to base. Which I did - multiple times.

Bars close at 0200, why would you need to get up? Just enough time to shower/shave, grab a cup of coffee, fire up a lucky strike, and and head in for the brief. You young guys are getting soft.

Otherwise, you take Avalon which somehow still manages to be under construction and will be for at least another year according to the signs. I hate that road.

I visited a buddy in Milton about 2 years ago and (it seems) that same stretch of Avalon was under construction. Same with HWY 87 North of Navarre.

To throw my hat in with the "where to live" advice. I'm between 35-45 minutes from Whiting and 25-30 minutes to NASP. Living about midway between Gulf Breeze and Navarre on the peninsular. I & my family love it. Its quiet, very low crime (as compared to P'cola), not much to do (no night life=good grades), but very close to normal shopping, and beaches. Kind of a pain in the ass to wake up earlier, but its a good trade for the positives.

One of the biggest tenets of Naval Aviation is know your own limits. If you know you'll need a monastic existence to pass flight school, then live in the Q and dedicate yourself to studying. If you can handle managing studying and the temptations of the real world like an adult, the live wherever you damn well please.

I lived in east pcola all through flight school. It was about a 40 min commute to NASWF and about a 10min cab ride home from the beach/downtown. I enjoyed being closer to civilization on my off time then being closer to the base. It did require that I manage my time a bit better, but I still left with wings and had a really good time in flight school.

I don't remember too many 0500 briefs and for the ones I do remember, the commute was significantly shorter at 0430. On the weekends I had lots of miltonites crashing on my couches after drinking and just hanging out to get away from it all.

Downtown P-cola is a great place to live in API or primary. Walking distance to all the good bars, easy drive to the beach or NASP, and a bit of a commute to NASWF. Will you spend a little more time driving to work? Sure, but you'll spend a lot less money on cabs home from the bar. It balances out.
