OCS Ship Date

Phoenix289

I just got some very interesting news. I'm a senior in college in BDCP SNA set to graduate this June. For some reason my OCS ship date was not given to me when I got into the program and I only found out today after asking my OR to look into it. January 1, 2012. It was my understanding that the Navy tries to get BDCP guys to OCS as close to graduation as possible, I can't believe there's going to be a six month gap. Considering that BDCP guys get an upgrade to E-5 upon graduation and the fact that I'll be done with school this could potentially be like a six month vacation other than having to stay in shape and meet with my recruiter regularly.

My question is whether anyone has heard of this happening before and if so, is there anything the Navy will require me to do during this time to get some of their money's worth out of me?

I'm still antsy to get to OCS so I'm not too happy about the delay after graduating, but I'm thinking I might as well get another job to keep myself busy and make a bunch of cash in the meantime. I'm just pretty shocked about the situation.

It appears as there is a paperwork issue. For instance you are actually graduating in May but they have you graduating in December. Talk to your OR about it.

I remember my collegiate manager mentioning an OCPO not reporting to OCS until winter, once. But this person was clearly an exception. A changing OCS date is not uncommon for those in BDCP; mine was changed earlier this year. Talk to your OR, and I imagine it'll change. If not, enjoy the vacation!

I graduate in October and also have a OCS date of January 1, 2012. I plan on using the 2-3 month gap to work out, travel, and spend quality time with my family before reporting.

I was under the impression there is a stand down through the new year usually, is it odd for a class to be reporting Jan 1?

I worked 5 days a week at the recruiting office before reporting for OCS. It was a good experience, but I'm just letting you know that depending on your recruiting station you may end up earning that paycheck.

That Jan 1 thing is probably just a placeholder... that happened to a few buddies of mine.

There was a boatload of people that got pushed out of YG10 into YG11 this last year. Talk to your recruiter, but if BUPERS just gave you a paid vacation, enjoy it. I also hear painters/contractors pay cash and probably like military folks. Not that I'd do anything like that...

I am also BDCP and I am graduating in May. Up until mid December I had an OCS date for January 1 of this year. I think they just assign January 1 as a placeholder and then give you an actual date eventually.

Thanks, I figured that in some cases they must make you work a little bit. I wouldn't even mind if I had nothing better to do. I was also going to say that New Years is a bit weird for a reporting date. I guess I'll just have to have my OR check to see if the date has changed periodically.

Alive and kicking...sort of.

This is accurate...I was scheduled to graduate December 2010 with a placeholder date of 01 JAN 2011 but I changed my graduation to this May, so I then got a new date of 17 July. When it gets closer to your graduation you'll get an exact date, but as Synix stated many got bumped due to FY10/11 issues..."welcome to the Navy!"
