What was said about there not being very many aviation slots, if any, is correct. Great time application wise if you have a law degree, though.
^^^ Well, I guess that makes sense. We can start suing the bastards instead of bombing them. As an older, wiser man has been known to say, "I weep..."
Yeah I too got my PRK done this last june. I finally got all my paperwork done for the medical documents and just had my 3 month check-up. I came in today and my OSO told me the bad news. I still might try NFO. He gave me his buddy's number who's also an NFO so I could get more information about the life of an NFO. I might just apply to graduate school and try my luck next year though.
How is it wrong? At this moment, there will be no SNA spots for OCC-203 (January '10) and OCC-204 (June '10), meaning no new SNA spots till OCC-205 (October '10). There's a huge thread on MarineOCS now that further confirms all of this. Supposedly PLC-ers are unaffected, however.
Don't you say that...don't you ever say that. I am applying for PLC Juniors right now and my OSO has not mentioned anything of this nature. As far as I know, Air Contracts are still available for people applying for PLC. I was going to speculate on what might be happening, but then I realized that I have no clue what I am talking about.
Fix the title. No more OCC-AIR for a year. OCC accounts for only a third, more or less, of officer accessions, and it's the easiest tap to shut or slow when the pipe gets full because they have the least invested in you. Sorry you're not getting a shot, but that's the way it is.
Talked to my OSO an hour ago. He said that PLC air contracts are still being handed out, but OCC air contracts are temporarily halted.
I'm somewhat in the same situation as you, with the exception of the age thing. I applied last August and had PRK in March, and I've been held up a couple times with my physical. I finally got my package together and I was hoping to go in January, but was told the same thing by my OSO. I don't really want to wait until next October, but I definitely want to be a officer in the Marine Corps. I'm considering going ground and possibly trying to request air once at TBS, but I don't really know yet.
That's a tough slot to get. There's usually only 1 or 2 air slots per class because most of the other slots are taken by the air contracts. And if they're not passing out any contracts, then that's because they've got too many SNA for now. I'm willing to bet they're not passing out TBS SNA slots either.
I just spoke to my OSO and told him I wanted to wait until next year. I hope my age won't be a problem. I turn 27 in August but I'm a prior. I'm not sure if that will be a factor in getting selected. Has anyone heard anything about age being a major factor for selection?
I believe that there are still NFO slots available. If the age thing becomes a problem then you might want to consider that and then trying to switch later. Disclaimer: I don't know for sure if the NFO thing is true but it came up in a conversation I was having. I also don't know anything about doing the switch thing. I can find out, though.
FWIW...this is hearsay so just take it as that. I spoke to my OSO and he didn't think any SNFO->SNA switches were going to be very likely. My friend (prior Sgt, who did the SNFO->SNA switch) just graduated TBS and he seemed to think that anything was possible. Bottom line, I would say sign on the dotted line for NFO with the intent of being an NFO and be content with that. IF a switch happens then all the better for you, but I wouldn't put my eggs in that basket or the Ground->SNA route either. I'm currently struggling with these decisions myself.
We were just briefed from MATSG-21 that SNFO to SNA transitions are not going to happen. There isn't a shortage of SNAs and a surplus of qualled SNFOs to pull from. You get what you signed for.
Would any of this news have any affect on people the have already graduated from ocs with an air contract and are waiting to graduate?
