Hey guys I am trying to get some info on a lateral transfer from NFO to either OCEANO or IW Officer. Has anyone here done this? I am an P3 NFO O4 who has not taken the bonus so I do not have any obligations to the Navy at this time so I should be clear on that end and after looking at the OceanO info page it looks like they value ASW experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only person I know who made a NFO to CW move is a LT Roger Misso. You can find him on Linkedin.

What kind of info? Most of the people I know who made the switch were SWOs.

When you say IW officer, do you mean a cryppie?

Knowing what I know about OCEANO and IW, I'd say IW is probably an easier transition for an NFO. Unless you get really jazzed about doing METOC, OCEANO is probably not for you. Most of the OCEANOs I know end up doing staff METOC tours and rarely deal with real OCEANO jobs. As an O-4, it may be a bit harder to transition; how many 1320s are each community taking from your year group? Good luck.

Am I reading it correctly that there are two different paths to CW, Direct Lateral to Designator CW and SWO with a CW option?

CW does seem to be a decent fit for a P3 NFO, but the openings in 1830 Intel will be more numerous than in 1810 simply because intel is a larger slice of the IWC pie. Do you have a foreign language and a master’s degree? If so, also look into 1710 FAO. The Navy is trying to grow the FAO program. The bonus of going FAO is — while you will have some required cross-training — you will not be automatically behind your “peers” and cross-training with a bunch of ENS, unlike CWOBC (8 wks in Pcola) or NIOBC (20 wks in VA beach).

My understanding is that SWO-IWC is only an option at the outset of commissioning (e.g. USNA, NROTC, OCS). This is to allow the officer meaningful time to earn a SWO pin and contribute something as a SWO before transition to IP or whatever. It can take 2-3 years. From what I have seen, the SWO-IWC options are very rare if not already closed.
