Oh, well, yeah. The CO of my first ship did that with one of my fellow ensigns. But usually that's for the Line SWO guys who would require administrative action if the DNQ'ed. For a Suppo or Doc or whatever, it wouldn't be required, and the CO wouldn't be under any pressure to qual a guy he didn't feel was ready or competant.

091204-N-0659H-002 MILLINGTON, Tenn. (Dec. 4, 2009) Nine officers assigned to Navy Personnel Command were among the first Sailors Navy-wide to receive the Professional Aviation Maintenance Officer (PAMO) warfare designator during a ceremony Dec. 4. The PAMO qualification recognizes the significant contributions made by aviation ground officers supporting the Navy's aviation mission and war fighting capabilities. The PAMO community is comprised of aerospace maintenance duty officers, aviation maintenance limited duty officers, and aviation maintenance chief warrant officers. Never mind, answered my own question.

Sharp looking wings though, one of the few good looking designs of late, I'll say.

Don't you mean “bling?”:) Crap! What next? In my day it was easy to figure out what someone did in the Navy! Left arm, hat, chest, it was done! Very few devices. Now you need a study guide.

Maybe we should take it a step past the Marine Corps and do away with all devices. Screw it, yer a Sailor, enough said.

Unless I'm mistaken, I've seen only a handful of devices in use by the Marines 1. Recon fellas 2. NA's and NFO's. I made the comment half sarcastic because it seems whenever something like this comes up, there is always a group of people who have an issue with someone (this case being AMDO's) getting something to set them apart from their peers, or something that they can take pride in.

Doing a PQS or "not fucking away your job" is NOT the same as getting thru flight school, or sub school/power school.

Yer def right MB, these new shiny wings are not on the same level as those two, but don't those who want to follow the ways of the SWOdom also have a PQS and a short school? They are all different beasts (though admittedly nothing can compare to something which can take almost two years to earn), but it is like comparing a trident and the ESWS or EAWS for enlisted. One takes quite awhile, with multiple schools, while the others take a simple PQS to complete. The pins are more of a pride bit for those who put in that extra work (compared to peers).

But they get same "billing" as Naval Aviator / NFO wings.

This is another case of hippy bullshit "when everyone is special, nobody is different" self esteem BS like kids getting participation trophies for just showing the fuck up to baseball practice.

    I declare shenanigans.

Tell that to the SWOs... their pin was created in what?... 1975? Weren't the dolphins and aviator badges the FIRST warfare devices?

Special pins because we did what was outside the norm for Naval Officer (and MUCH more dangerous that being a SWO at the time).

Now I'm betting there is probably a special pin for Admin LDOs coming next.

    Yay!!! Everyone gets an award!!!!

Maybe helo squadrons can get some fancy almost aircrew wings for our maintainers that fly with us on FCF's. It can have crossed rotor and a wrench in the middle.

I think it's kind of ironic that on the top of the board right now we have a story about a retired senior chief getting busted for wearing medals that he didn't earn, probably because of some feeling if inadequacy. Then we also have a story about the creation of a new naval award to placate some small group's feeling of inadequacy.

...or the many years they had to spend in the navy to become a CWO/LDO.

Admin CWOs have a special collar device, as do most CWOs.

    Fixed it for you.

Naval Aviator wings were designed in 1917, Submariners designed their dolphins in 1923.

Eh, I say let 'em have their "wings." I don't quite think we've gotten to the Air Force level of gheyness WRT warfare devices. Christ, every E-2 and his spouse had some kind of comms/maintenance/shoe tying device at Vance.

These guys (the AMDO/LDOs) are busting their ass to make sure we can fly, regardless of their posting. There's no doubt who has the real wings in the Navy.

Oh, and about the original design... Did some board sit down back in '17 and base their decision on the design that's gonna get the wearer the most ass throughout time?

If so, bully for us! 'Cause it worked!

No kidding. I saw my E-3 air force cousin almost exactly two months after he left boot camp and he had some gay insignia thing above the, no shit, four ribbons on his chest. He spent boot camp and two months in the air force and had two rows of ribbons while I had wings and a pizza stain right after flight school. All I could do was shake my head. At least he recognized my incredulous look and understood that he was wearing five participation awards.

Ok, but how does making it through flight school qualify you for a warfare pin? Wouldn't it seem more appropriate to get the warfare pin at least after the RAG or better yet, after you qualify in your first squadron?
