Sure. They are. A couple pictures from twenty years ago doesn't say much.

At least the Army has finally realized that ACU sucks. They should be in the new Multicam soon. Would be nice if we got a clue and went that route also.
    Ugly/ridiculous looking uniforms - check
Not doing anything to actually make your seabag smaller - check
Uniforms that are not at all comfortable - check
Making everyone feel special by allowing junior sailor input via NavyTimes - check

Sounds like great Navy success from the uniform board

So wait...the desert cammie uniform is not going away. But our snake eaters get their own unique desert digital cammie? Even though they'll probably continue to rightfully wear whatever the hell they want. Am I the only one who fails to see the logic here?

Who the fuck thinks this stuff up? Me and the three other stooges playing foosball in the wardroom could come up with a better process than this in the time it takes to hang five goals on each other.

The people that were "In the field" then are the people that are making the decisions now. Makes sense if you think about it. I dont run this Donkey Show I just work here.

Fire protection. In his case, probably just trying it out.

Depends on your Noble Eagle number. For people in-country Iraq and Afghanistan almost everyone wears ACU's except for people assigned to Navy-specific billets like NAVCENT FWD support. Almost everyone else gets to rock the old DCU's including those in the Deid, Kuwait and Bahrain, etc. Some people get remissioned though so you will still see Navy guys in those places with ACU's.

A helluva a lot better than what they used to have at least.

Some informed speculation from someone who may be smarter than me.....these are being funded and developed by SOCOM for their Navy guys and the thinking is that Big Navy will come in and adopt them when they are finalized not having to pay for all the roll-out costs. Not sure if they are that significant and I am not sure the Navy is that smart but it seems like a good idea if that is true.

Why is the Navy doing this? We are the only service left without these types of uniforms to wear in the field and we have to rely on other services, or old uniforms, when we deploy to areas where these are needed. Part of it is PR, no one has a clue how many Navy people are downrange when they look around because they almost all look like Army guys and a lot of the higher ups want more visibility for IA/GSA's downrange including the new NAVCENT. And a lot of it is practical because the contract for DCU's runs out next spring and these would be a lot better than the DCU's. And I am pretty certain that unless you deploy downrange or to particular locations you aren't going to get these uniforms so it is not like the seabag is going to get any heavier.

    Key words: Organizational clothing

If your unit uses it, you'll get it at no cost to you. And when you do deploy, your seabag probably won't include anything other than cammies anyway.
If not, it won't affect you.

Doesn't the Navy have enough uniforms? I like the fact that we in the Marine Corps have Dress and Service, and Cammies/Tanker suits and Fight Suits. Well, until you get to the Field Grade level...

What's wrong with foosball? Our wardrooms not big enough for a pool table, and you've gotta do something when you're waiting for the plane to come up.

My foosball skills improved 100% during my first deployment, to Kef. The consesnus among the JOs was that foosball skills were most evident at the three beer level. Things went downhill rapidly after that. The Brass Nut was a happening place, until the front office shut it down for a week after a flag officer experienced an upside down Margarita. The O-7 loved it; the CO, not so much.

Why not just give everyone the woodlands? It hides dirt, is functional, and ISN'T MOTHEREFFING BLUE TARD CAMOFLAGE?!

Things like this make me want to punch myself in my crank.

'cuz woodlands aren't any better than anything else when you smear gray paint on them from some freshly-painted bulkhead with no sign. Usually happened to me about 15 minutes after getting on the Boat, usually with my good embroidered Friday bag...goddamned Boat...

Anyway. I stand by my opinion that aquaflauge sucks, but it's better than what it replaced.

In fact, I actually looked it up NECC only makes up approx 10% of Navy total manpower.

The NWU which you're expected to wear during working hours (and actually doing work like painting) sells for $40 at the Exchange uniform shop.
The coveralls which is is meant to replace sell for $23.50 at the Exchange.

I'm doing the math saying that if I need to buy clothes for painting and working in filthy spaces, what uniform would I want to replace out of pocket???

It totals waaaaaaaaaaay more than 40 bucks. Trousers, blouse, cover, nametapes, insignia, plus embroidery will set you back about $120. For one set. That's not including boots (which I plan on using the API issued black ones) or, if you desire, the parka.

^^^Absolutely. Getting slapped with a $3000 uniform bill at the end of OCS was great. Especially when $1000 of those uniforms never get used.

If you're around NASC, find someone redes-ing from the Boat School or NROTC. I bet they need uniforms. I offloaded 2 sets of NWUs that way.

Which is my point; saying the NWU's are better uniforms because 'they hide paint better' is a specious argument. (Fester, not looking at you here, this is the party line of the Navy)

Yes, they made hide paint better, but what sailor is going to want to ruin his NWUs painting when it costs $77 to replace the ruined ones??? You can pay $24 and get coveralls (I'm calling the name tapes, rank insignia and boots a wash since you need them for both) which is much easier to replace than a uniform that is 3 times as much.

You'd think it would make sense to use some disposable painters' coveralls instead of ruining working uniforms with paint.

I thought that was part of the reason they may have gone through SOCOM to help defer the cost. I think a key part of the quote about $80 million is "field" the new uniforms, the cost of buying them for the guys who will wear them. While it is a likely a bit more than to just keep buying the BDU's and ACU's I already pointed out earlier that the ACU contract runs out next spring and for the Navy alone to continue to buy them would cost us in the long term, and they ain't all that great when compared to the Marines new digis or the ACU's.
