Hi. Rather than give a lengthy story about my background and desire to join the service, I'll make this short and ask you guys, many of you seem to be extremely well-informed, what the likelihood is that I could be accepted to flight school through the USMC.

I'm a college freshman planning on beginning PLC this summer. My vision is 20/25 far and 20/200 near in my left eye (+5.00), and 20/50 far, 20/200 near in my right eye (+6.00). My right eye has an astigmatism but I'm not sure to what degree.

That being said, based solely on my vision, I have to ask you this:

1) Do I have a chance at obtaining a pilot slot, or is my vision too poor? I've heard that it needs to be 20/40 uncorrected at worst, but I'm assuming I can receive PRK or some other sort of eye surgery to correct my vision at least to the point that it would be below 20/40 uncorrected. If it helps, I took my physical at MEPS yesterday and my vision examiner wrote down that my left eye was correctable to 20/20, but my right eye was only correctable to 20/25. Does that mean even with surgery it would only be correctable to 20/25, or only with contacts/glasses?
2) If I do have a chance to obtain surgery and still qualify for a slot, at what point would I be able to receive the surgery? I'm assuming this would be before I actually began any intensive flight training.
3) Does the USMC cover costs for such surgery?

I appreciate any attempt to answer or at least simplify these questions for me, especially because I'm under pressure to begin studying for the ASTB as soon as possible if I'm to designate myself as PLC Air as opposed to PLC Ground, which was my backup.

Thanks.

Marine Aviation and Poor Eyesight, Part 2

Apparently the fact that I made this account for the sole purpose of making this one post wasn't good enough. I edited my profile information and I'm now reposting the information from my last thread, which was closed. I appreciate any attempts to assist.

Probably shouldn't start with a smart-ass comment. Remember, you came to us looking for help. Not the other way around. I didn't even read the rest of your post.

Good point. It's alright, I'll come back to post on this board someday after I have a nice big stick lodged up my ass so that I can reply to questions with such a painstaking degree of elitism pervading my messages. Irony intended.

Thanks.
