Let the poor bastard figure it out the hard way. If you have not seen the movie "Hall Pass", I think it should be a pre-req for anybody about to propose, so many one liner's that sum up the single to married transition, at least it rung true for me and about 10 buddies.

I wonder what the feasibility of issuing ipads to students in API and then using nothing but e-copies of pubs the rest of the way, (as well as FLIPs, etc...) would be.

Our ready room looks like a damn Starbucks when you walk in with all the iPads floating around.

Everyone at the NWC now gets issued an iPad and about half of the assigned reading is in electronic media. Works out pretty well. I do think Naval Aviation is in need of some modernization in tis area. There's no reason we shouldn't all be able to file and get WX using portable devices. The idea of using them for pubs airborne in a tactical jet sounds good, but I wonder how well it would actually work in a daily use scenario. I can see them getting beat up pretty good and ruggedizing them might make them too bulky to really use comfortably. Also, if the thing shits the bed for whatever reason you're SOL if you don't have backp pubs. Thoughts?

They could always mandate carrying two of them when flying solo or whatever. Ipad + a backup Ipad still beats the hell outta 4 different approach plates/STARS/charts/AFD/IFR Supp and whatever else you've got to have with you.

I don't see that happening. For those of you who haven't hit the fleet yet, the only time you really have to carry a lot of pubs is if you're leaving your local area, which is probably between 5-10% of your flying. If you're staying local, all you probably need (depending on your area) is one approach plate volume, one high enroute and maybe a low enroute in addition to an IFR Supp. Not really that big of a burden. Also the nice part about flying around the boat/blue water - no pubs.

    Blue water, yeah no pubs.

Green/Brown water and no tanking, pubs. Pubs that covered 7 countries.

I've used the iPad pubs in the C-12 (a buddies' personal one, not issued) and it was outstanding. Almost like having a moving map again, but in some ways better.

For TACAIR? Not sure, but definitely worth a try. Aren't they using them in AFG these days?

Yeah, they're loading up GRGs on them. I think the Marines started, then CVW guys followed suit, but only within the last year or so. Great resource for that.

Good. I had to carry around an accordion file full of GRGs.

    PITA.

I wonder if they can use a search function? Or it's just a space saver?

Talking with guys who have used them to replace paper charts and plates in the T-45 they say they are awesome. It's easier to navigate and it takes less time to find stuff, which means more time spent on flying the airplane and working your scan. They are backlit, so no more trying to decipher what the thing says, and the screen is big enough and the ability to zoom means not having to figure out what the fine print is telling you.

Bad stuff- you can gouge up plates but it's very difficult. It's much easier to use a pen on a paper plate. The back light can be bright and distracting ( Not an issue under the hood where you turn everything up like a baseball park) from the front seat, so you have to play with dimmer settings. Not sure how it would work with NVGs.

Other cool stuff- you can plug a GPS receiver and it will track you across the Lo and Hi charts. Apparently they are working on linking it to plates as well. Someone makes a kneeboard strap for it, so you can slap the thing to your knee no prob.

Search function on apple products is pretty good. Don't know what format they're using, but one would imagine it's done in a search friendly manner.

the FltPlan.com app is extremely easy and searchable. From what I've seen from goofing off with foreflight is that it's even easier to use.

If I had an M3 or a Z06, I could have gotten to work faster, which would have enabled me to spend more time on my briefs, overall doing better in flight school. It is unfair that other studs had Vettes and M3s when I went through. This system is stacked against me!

I think we may have just found the answer to the "what % get jets?" question.....the same % that drive M3s and Vettes? New flight school motto: Vettes get ya Jets. ;)

Good thread and discussion...but I find it amusing that we're getting excited about bringing our aircraft navigation technology up to speed with your average -172 driver. :)

I'm not upside down or underwater in mortgages, but I do drive a Saturn. Either way, I think spending $800 on something that's going to cost $300 in a year is fucking asinine. Maybe us old geezers are just better at spending money...

You're right, there's nothing better than the iProducts. They are perfect. (Which is why they come out with new ones every few months.)

Speaking of which, shouldn't you be in line for their latest and greatest?

I guess so. I don't have one. Saw a couple guys with a GPS thing that plugs into the one port.
