Just Starting OCS Process

Hello Everyone,
I have been looking around the site for some time and finally jumping into posting some questions I have for you guys. I am currently an enlisted AT1 stationed Keesler AFB, MS. I am 26 and married and have been in for almost 7 years. Im finally getting off y butt and puting together a Pilot/NFO package next year. I have several questions so far that I haven't gotten some straight answers from. First, is there a time limit as to how far out documents can be submitted, for example i know you have to have an HIV test within the last 2 years, so as long as you got one within two years of your package submittion your fine. The stuff im worried about is like your Letter of Recommendations and your Interviews, if i got an interview, in Oct 2013, and didnt submit my OCS package til October the following years is that two far out or would the interview be expired? My second question is has anyone gone and got interviews and recommendation letters done with other branches of service, Air Force or Marines, I'm stationed on an AF base and have a small command with only 3 officers. I have more interaction with Air Force and Marine officers than my own really. Also would it look better for my package if i had Navy Officers instead of other branches. We have the Air Force Hurricane Hunters stationed here and if i could get some interviews or LoR from them that would help. Third, who do i talk to about submitting and age waiver to, i will be 27 next June and wont be turning in a package til after that and may not even finish OCS until after my 28th birthday and i know Pilot is at a cutoff of 29 with waivers. Ill keep this first post to these first few questions as I have many more but these are the ones that I am worried about now. Thanks everyone for the help and i apologize ahead of time if these questions have been answered before in older posts, im just hopin for a new set of eyes to give me a little guidance.

I contacted several officer I had previously worked under and they did the interview over the phone. Just send them an email with the proper form to fill out so they don't have to go looking.

For us fleet folks, the whole package goes in together. Medical to include HIV tests go with the rest of the package. As for time frames, there is no strict guidance I have seen in the OPNAV 1420.1. I imagine your Skipper would question why you have interviews so far in advance to having the complete package. My last command would not let interviews be conducted prior to the package being complete and a "board" format for interviews was their requirement.

My current command allowed me to take the ball and roll with it however I saw fit.

7. Information and Guidance for Applicant Interviews. A minimum
of three officer interviews are required.
a. Interview the applicant personally following the guidance on NAVCRUIT 1131/5 and OPNAV 1420/1.
b. Interviews can be conducted separately or simultaneously by a panel of officers. The officer(s) conducting the interviews should be in paygrades O3 and above, and only one of the interviewing officers can be in the applicant’s chain of command. At least one interviewer should be in the designator for which the applicant is applying.

No specific guidance I can see for using other service officers but I would stray away from the idea cause you are interviewing to be a Naval Officer. Solicit a LOR from them and try to track down some Naval Officers for the interviews....if you run into any issues contact the local NRD and they should be able to get a few officer recruiters lined up to help you out.

Thanks for the advice. I called my NRD in New Orleans and they put me in contact with a local officer recruiter chief and he basically told me he can't help me because I'm not a civilian going in. He doesn't know the active duty to officer side of the program and can't really help me and said that my command career counselor is the one to help me... Only crappy thing is that my CCC knows less than I do about the programs because he isn't an NC and he hasn't been to CCC school. So I'm basically flying solo here and having to fly by the seat of my pants on this. Thankfully I have a buddy who just finished flight school and the whole process so I can talk to him a little.

He can help you but may not be willing to. You will at a minimum have to take the ASTB through the recruiters. If you need help with locating interviews call the NRD and again and talk to their admin. Someone will be able to get you in touch with some officers. If you need help Pm me. I know a few NCs who came from that NRD who may be able to help me help you get in touch with the right people.

I know how it feels to fly solo on this. There is very little fleet support and knowledge so you have to do a lot on your own and get creative at times.

Hey I was in the same boat as you when I submitted my application. To answer some of your questions:

1. Medical documents have to be dated 90 days or less. I had to resubmit new doucments because mine was over 90 days.
2. When it comes to your LORs and interviews, you want to keep it 6 months or less, that's the window I used.
3. Concerning the LORS, you can get LORs from other branches but interviews I believe have to be Navy because it asks for the person doing the interview's designator. I don't know if other branches have designators. Also I'd keep the interview Navy because at least one of the interviews has to be from the designator that you are applying. Since you are applying for Pilot/NFO board, that means you have to have at one Pilot (1310) and one NFO (1320) interview appraisal.
4. Since you're active duty, you can get the age waiver through the global. Just email Freda Hudspeth in the global and respectfully request an age waiver for Pilot/NFO.

If you have any other questions just let me know, and I'll do my best to help. A lot of CCC are clueless when it comes to OCS. Only programs they usually have knowledge of is STA-21 and LDO/CWO.

I really appreciate all the help fellas. This is a crazy process and I'm excited to get it over with and hopefully get that Final Selection letter next year.
Also have the designators changed at all. I noticed that it says 1310 for Pilot and 1320 NFO, but a friend of mine who got selected and just finished flight school sent me his package and he had put in there for his designators as 1370, 1390. I saw that those have a T for training or something, but is there a difference when it comes to boards selections.

1390 is the designator for Student Naval Aviator (SNA) and 1370 is the designator for Student Naval Flight Officer (SNFO). I believe once you get winged than you are designated 1310 and 1320 respectfully.

Correct, but just to be a bit anal...
1390 is the designator for Student Naval Aviator (SNA) and 1370 is the designator for Student Naval Flight Officer (SNFO). I believe once you get winged then you are designated 1310 and 1320 respectively.
:D
Additionally, for Reserve Aviators, just stick a 5 at the end instead of a 0 (e.g., 1315 for NA in the USNR). I think it's a 7 if you're FTS. Learned that at the NOW class at OCS. One of the few things that stuck.

Hopefully I can give you insight and guidance on some of the questions you posted in this thread. My situation is very similar to yours, 8 years of AD service ET2 (SW)/IDW) and I just submitted my OCS package on the 17th of October for the upcoming December 2nd Information Dominance Corps board. As far as documents, the only documents which have an "expiration" (for lack of a better word) would be the medical forms DD2807-1 and DD2808. The most current instruction calls for these documents to be within 90 days old, however do not fret if they are older than 90 days. Submitting your medical portion of your OCS package will be a separate entity from the 1420.1B application itself. The OCS fleet processors request you send two separate PDF's (neither to exceed 10MB) once your package is finalized and ready for submission. In other words, if your medical portion has exceeded the prescribed 90 days, don't be overly concerned because the medical portion does not become a major factor until after being PRO-REC Y, or selected; and if that is the case, you currently being AD makes it very easy to complete another commissioning physical. Oh, forgot to mention, HIV will be a separate print out other than your DD2807-1 and DD2808. When you go to medical tell them you need a HIV result printout for and OCS package and they "should" know what you are requesting. Moving on, I had the same issue with my appraisal sheets being dated near a year back. There is no instruction on the periodicity of the 1131/5 or Interviewer's Appraisal Sheet. In fact I submitted a total of seven appraisal sheets (three of which have to be within the designator(s) applying for) four of which were 10-12 months old and three current. My CO recommend I do this because for one I had them, and two it establishes a baseline/timeline for the board members and conveys to them my persistence and desire to become a Naval Officer. Not for certain about submitting appraisal sheets from Officers from other branches. If I was in your shoes, I would stick solely with Naval Officers, simply a recommendation. Oh, for clarity, LOR's are more so for civilian personal submitting packages for OCS; for instance teachers, supervisors, retired military; since you are AD you should be utilizing 1131/5 Interviewer's Appraisal Sheet for your package. Just dawned upon me, perhaps you can use LOR's from Officer's in other branches and use the Appraisal sheet strictly for Naval Officers, again simply my opinion. Moving on, Ah the age waiver. Age waiver's are procured via the OCM (Officer Community Manager) located in Millington TN. Website http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/officer/communitymanagers/Pages/default.aspx list all the OCM's for your desired designators. Age cutoff for SNA/Pilot is 27 yrs old, however waiver-able up to 24 months or age 29. So if you can get your package in withing the next 6-12 months, you should be fine. I recommend calling first, then emailing the OCM for a waiver request. Within your email state your request, some amplifying information about yourself and that you respectfully request an age waiver. Once they respond via email, simply print the email out and add to your package, that will be used as your actual age waiver. Good luck with this venture, it is tough and arduous but definitely achievable. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to contact me, I am here to help. Trust me, I was in your very same shoes not very long ago...

For clarity and solely for OCS purposes (until commission), NFO designator is 13700 and Pilot is 13900. Once commissioned designator will become for digit code of 1310/1320 incumbent of being a fixed wing or rotatory type...

Good info on just submitting them, there is no actual instruction detailing the max age of LOR's or IA's, it is one of those things that comes out on an NRC note or via email as guidance to NRD's, this is one of those things where AD applicants are left out in the cold, but the PM's generally will not have an issue if the minimum number are within a year.

The board isn't the one that checks the date, the PM's do, the board members don't have enough time to look at the dates.

What??? You do not get a 1310 or 1320 designator upon commission. You will stay a 1390/70 until you successfully finish flight school and become a winged Pilot/NFO.
