I don’t care if I hurt your feelings

My question is jet vs helo quality of life, emphasis on family life.

Expect to be gone at least 3-4 months out of the year for training (Think CAX/EMV/ITX...whatever they're calling it now..it'll probably change again by the time you get to the fleet) and possibly 1-3 weeks supporting an exercise or TAD billet as an IA. During a MEU cycle anywhere for 7-8 months on deployment during the year plus workups which may include extended dets away from home for weeks at a time. Work hours depend on what your ground job entails and where you're at time-wise in the squadron. More senior Captains typically have more in-depth and time-consuming jobs. As a boot 8-5pm is probably a good benchmark, and during heavy fly weeks where you're getting pumped through a syllabus about 3-4 hours additionally at home studying prepping for briefs (but you should be doing that anyways... right?). With the drawdown and decreasing aviation assets available (whether because of transition or aging) the rest of the units will have to support the same amount of exercises and training which may lead to more dets away from home. By the time you get back from deployment and finally rejoin the squadron (HMH/HMLA deploy in thirds and rarely deploy the entire squadron at the same time nowadays) the ready room and billets will have changed and you won't recognize a lot of the people in the unit and you'll start from scratch again.

This is a HMLA centric point of view and will probably change because we're not doing OEF/OIF anymore but this could apply to HMH as well. VMMs are the outlier here because those guys seem like they're busier than most, supporting the MEUs and deploying random squadrons to the med for the SPMAGTF-CR. Everyone likes their shiny new toys.

If you're concerned about quality of life - go C-130s, other wise don't expect any type of leniency or coddling because you have a family. Everyone is the same boat (literally or figuratively).
