Are individuals self procuring gear like this (on their own dime) - or does the PR shop have discretion to order on your behalf - is there an approval process?

Yes.

With the exceptions of lip lights and Zeta Liners, chances are if you're a student, you're not having gear bought for you. And if you're a fleet guy, it depends on what's happening fiscally.

I am wondering how the 650 works with gloved hands in the TH-57C - or is it fine for students to discard gloves now. The interface is primarily touch screen, although a knob exists.

Late to the thread (was on XC this weekend) but it works fine with the standard issue gloves.

On the HT-side of the house, and I know this because my first job in the squadron was Supply, our Corpus studs were getting Wiley-X fingerless gloves, and the Whiting guys were getting the standards NATOPS issued gloves. Many have resorted to cutting the tips of the fingers off those if they are too cheap to buy Wiley-X.

I think Wiley-X has a mil discount (though I don't know the details). Not sure what they go for on eMall (or whatever that site is).

Interestingly, before I realized who made the Massif gloves, I asked Massif if they did mil pricing for individuals. I was told they do, but there's a minimum order. Kind of annoying. Then once I found them at Outdoor Research, there was no reason to buy them from Massif.
