When I joined the Navy in 1982, a new 0-7 was a RADM (LH) wearing 2 stars. He then promoted to O-8 RADM (UH) wearing 2 stars.

Around that same time, the other services were bitching because, for instance, a Navy O-7 RADM(LH) worked for an Army BG O-7 who was senior. The Army general was el jefe but because the Navy admiral had 2 stars to the Army’s 1, the Navy Admiral had a higher precedence. The Navy O-7s didn’t give a shit and did as the Army O-7 commanded. But the Army (and other services) claimed it was too confusing and made ceremonies shit awkward.

So the Navy said 0-7 will be a Commodore Admiral and then quickly changed it to Commodore a few months later. That last a 3 or 4 years and the Navy reverted to Rear Admiral (Lower Half) but with only 1 Star.

Just to obfuscate things a little further, the O-5 in charge of one of the the patrol craft squadrons referred to himself as "Commodore" around'08~09 ish time.

Was that his official job title?
I can't remember if it was official or informal. The only reason I remember it was because I smirked pretty bad when I first heard it... I smirk cynically at a lot of things so you know this had to have been a pretty snarky smirk for me to remember it.

They are no longer welcome in the First class mess, and are not Chiefs yet, and slugs is not PC anymore.
"First class mess", AYFKM? Equally stupid. Can we segregate the ranks even further? Guess what an E6 is? Not a Chief.

And yes, I am prior enlisted. Thankfully, I was on fast attack submarines where we did not have to deal with this idiocy. Chiefs and officers had their own berthing, for the most part, and they overflowed to other berthing areas. Officers ate in the "wardroom", as small as it was... E9 and below at on the mess decks where the E7-E9 cadre had their own "table" which, at the time, sat six people. Everyone else sat on a first come, first served basis.

The term “ mess” was meant as the group of people, not a place.

And yes submariners life aboard the boat is completely different than the surface Navy.

Glad I didn’t chose Quatermaster subs.?

Remember when you could rate a thread? "I wish I had more hands, so I could give this thread four thumbs down!"
New bad thread: how do you address a four thumbs down admiral (select)?

Or you could address them like a human being and give them the input/feedback they're looking for to make a decision.
