In Japan you don't keep eye contact, in Korea (and China too I think) you do. The reason you do not keep eye contact is because you're expressing trust for that person, trust that you can take your eyes off of him and he won't kill you. If you keep eye contact it means you don't trust him.

Now the prez could have kept his back straight, that would be a proper Japanese bow.

I have no problem with bowing to the leader of a nation for which bowing is appropriate, such as Japan, China, Korea, etc. Bowing before the king of England is wrong. Bowing before anyone who does not bow back is wrong. Bowing lower than someone makes you not an equal, and is thus wrong.

I'm pretty sure everyone remembers who won. Not really news worthy but I'd prolly fire the person that's supposed to be gouging him up on this shit.

You gotta wonder if his protocol officer is feeding him this stuff, or if something else is AFU in the line.

The President of the United States does not bow to any other world leader...

Unless we are apologising to the Musim for Iraq or Afghanistan... Of Native Americans who rightfully own all of CONUS.... or European, forgive us for intervening in WWII... or Gay for slighting you when it comes to civil rights,... or Mexicans who just want to come to Americans and get a better life.... or folks without healthcare beecause it's the insurance companies fault.... or the terrorists in Gitmo because you deseerve the Contitutional protection.... or the unwed mothers of 5 because you deserve your montly check.... or everyone else that has somehow been offended by while males at some point over the last 400 years, it's obviously my fault....

The office of the Presidency has been reduced to bowing, scraping, sniveling, and apologizing. Where will America be after enduring three more years of this?

That low rumbling you hear is the bodies of WWII Veterans and KIA rolling over in their graves. For the Man-Child, who supposedly comes from Hawaii, the site of Pearl Harbor, and the Punchbowl Cemetery and the USS Arizona Memorial, to bow and scrape before the Emperor of Japan, while many of those brave men that fought in the Pacific Theater still remain alive, goes WAY beyond the pale.
"Man-Child," really?

I would say we should let living veterans speak for themselves and not make assumptions about how much the ones who gave all for something so important would care about something as inconsequential as this...

By the way, what exactly do you mean when you say he is "supposedly" from Hawaii?http://www.military.com/news/article/August-2009/ermey-says-hell-square-away-birthers.html

All in all, a disgrace. The only redeeming feature is that at least he did not bow his head and bend his knee, as he did with the Saudi monarch.

When Obama bows to a foreign leader what he is really doing is giving the USA the finger.

I have news for him. Americans are going to give him the bums rush in 2012....

Those long flights aboard Air Force One must cause his lumbago to flair up..

One problem with this bow and showing deference to the emperor is it follows on the heels of Obama not bothering to cover his heart or salute the Unknown Soldier just three days ago.

Who wants to justify this bit of impropriety?

And if he was prepped to bow to the emperor of Japan, why couldn't he be prepped to cover his heart at the ceremonies at Arlington?

Nothing the president does is by accident.

Yeah, this is so right and so infuriating at the same time. Quit bowing and quit apologizing and start acting like the President of the United States. Somebody needs to lean over and tell him he's in the Big Leagues now and the guys like Washington, Lincoln, and Kennedy weren't about to go bow to anybody or apologize for jack or shit.

And this sense of 'American Entitlement' where everyone wants the gov't to cut them a check and make their life easier is making me physically sick. How about quit having kids you can't take care of and go get a job, education, and earn something and STFU.

If I were in his shoes, I'd bow too... just not that low. The emperor may be an esteemed symbol of Japan's rich and colored past, but Obama is America's head of state and the most powerful man on the face of the earth. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's a big deal, but I still hope he thought long and hard about this decision before bowing that low.

You Øtard apologists do NOT understand that there is, and has been for decades, a presidential protocol (there is even an office in the White House for the current doofus and the First Linebacker to use, since it's obvious they don't and haven't). The President NEVER bows to a foreign ruler like this - NEVER. It is NOT being sophisticated to deviate from the protocol - it is called being ignorant and it appalls and embarrasses the foreign dignitaries who are at a loss on how to respond.
