For us culturally ignorant types, what's wrong with this picture? I thought bowing was a sign of respect in the asian culture.

If you bow lower than the person you're greeting, it's a sign of submissiveness. A bow between equals is shallow.

ie: look at a kung-fu movie. The student always bows lower than the master.

Its just not done. Not in all our years as a nation has one of our presidents bowed, even for respects sake, to another head of state. It's not meant to be culturally indignant or defiant, but representative that we are a nation of equals, bowing to no man.

He's already done this once to a King Abdullah and caught a bunch of crap; I'm pretty surprised he'd make that mistake again.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you also supposed to keep eye contact when you're bowing?

The President of the United States does not bow to any other world leader. The excuse proffered for the last time with King Abdullah was that Obama was so much taller, and thus wanted to crouch down to see him at eye level. Look at the pics in the link and tell me if that explanation holds water. This latest event with the Japanese Emperor, he is clearly bowing. I don't see how the WH communications office will be able to spin it otherwise.

Yes. The aversion of the eyes is construed as subservience.
Does anybody not think that this stuff matters??

This thread is a waste of space. Who cares! Airwarriors is my refuge to detour myself from seeing this stuff on main stream news.

The office of the Presidency has been reduced to bowing, scraping, sniveling, and apologizing. Where will America be after enduring three more years of this?

That low rumbling you hear is the bodies of WWII Veterans and KIA rolling over in their graves. For the Man-Child, who supposedly comes from Hawaii, the site of Pearl Harbor, and the Punchbowl Cemetery and the USS Arizona Memorial, to bow and scrape before the Emperor of Japan, while many of those brave men that fought in the Pacific Theater still remain alive, goes WAY beyond the pale.

I'm pretty sure everyone remembers who won. Not really news worthy but I'd prolly fire the person that's supposed to be gouging him up on this shit.

In Japan you don't keep eye contact, in Korea (and China too I think) you do. The reason you do not keep eye contact is because you're expressing trust for that person, trust that you can take your eyes off of him and he won't kill you. If you keep eye contact it means you don't trust him.

Now the prez could have kept his back straight, that would be a proper Japanese bow.

I have no problem with bowing to the leader of a nation for which bowing is appropriate, such as Japan, China, Korea, etc. Bowing before the king of England is wrong. Bowing before anyone who does not bow back is wrong. Bowing lower than someone makes you not an equal, and is thus wrong.

You gotta wonder if his protocol officer is feeding him this stuff, or if something else is AFU in the line.

    "Man-Child," really?

I would say we should let living veterans speak for themselves and not make assumptions about how much the ones who gave all for something so important would care about something as inconsequential as this...

By the way, what exactly do you mean when you say he is "supposedly" from Hawaii?

All in all, a disgrace. The only redeeming feature is that at least he did not bow his head and bend his knee, as he did with the Saudi monarch.

When Obama bows to a foreign leader what he is really doing is giving the USA the finger.

I have news for him. Americans are going to give him the bums rush in 2012....

Those long flights aboard Air Force One must cause his lumbago to flair up..
