So the word on the street is that VMA-513 is shutting down within a year. Anybody have any word on this as it wasn't apart of FY12 Marine Corps AvPlan?

    It's true. Lots of politics.

This decision was made on high and released to those that matter well after there was anything that could be done about it.

It's a Hornet v Harrier issue that will work itself out as the F-35 takes over.

For what it's worth, it's not the end of the world (and I'm a former Nightmare). Somebody has to get shut down.

    You can't make everybody happy.

I thought the Nightmares were going to be the first F-35 squadron? I guess not...

That was the plan...until Dean Wormer ID'd the "Nightmares" as the worst fraternity on campus.

"Every Halloween, the trees are filled with underwear. Every spring, the toilets explode. Of course I'm talking about the Nightmares, you TWERP!"

Nope. It was going to be VMFA-332, but now it's going to be VMFA-121.

We've been hearing about it for awhile. I just want to know what the plan for their pilots is.

They've narrowed it down to three options:

    1) Take them out back after the disestablishment ceremony and shoot them.

    2) Let them all out of the Corps on a special early retirement program created just for them, complete with a bonus cash incentive.

    3) Spread them out to the remaining MAG squadrons and PCS the ones that were due to be movers anyway.

Rumor has it that they're leaning slightly toward COA 3.

    We shall see.

I just don't want COA 1 to be met upon me because there is less invested in me.

Don't worry. The Marine Corps will be sure to get their money out of you. You'll be fine.

The good news is that when they DO decide to put people out to pasture, it's generally via station pilot gigs or the training command.

    Life is good.
