Well folks, I did it again... I bought another firearm. This time I finally added a 1911 to my collection. It's a Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Mil-Spec parkarized model. I got it out the door for $537. Not a bad price. My dealer loved it and may want to buy one of his own.

Its a great firearm. I have the same one. I have fed about 1500 rounds through it and never once had a jam or misfire. You cant beat the 1911 - and the springfield models are very solid and affordable as you saw. Congrats and enjoy.

Looks great --- you just can't go wrong with a 1911. Period. By some strange twist of fate ... I do not posess a "modern" S/A 1911. I've got a Springfield Armory 1911 --- WW1 production --- but not the current commercial itteration. Let us know how it well it feeds/works with JHP's when you get the chance to take it to the range. :)

Gonna try some Ranger-T in it. That's the defense ammo I run in my Glock and SIG, I'm a fan of it.

Is "Ranger-T" basically the follow-on to Black Talon SXT and/or Winchester Ranger/Supreme SXT (LEO and civilian ammo minus the "black" allusions)??? What about Cor-bon??? I'm thinking about NEVER using it again ....

Speaking of Winchester Black Talon --- I heard two versions regarding it's demise as a commercial handgun cartridge. One, the obvious, pathetic, racially inspired hysteria regarding it's name, a.k.a. "Black-Felon" ammunition. The second involved the black Lubralox coating --- which was incorrectly identified as "teflon" and reputed to penetrate body armor, thus becoming one of that class of so-called "cop-killer bullets" .

It was more of the paranoia and the "OMG COP KILLER TEFLON BULLETS" aspect than anything else that made it go away.

Yes, Ranger-T is the new and improved "Black Talon". It is essentially the same design, with improvements to the jacket and improved expansion. It's marketed as "LEO Only", but that is purely manufacturer marketing. If you can get your hands on it, you can buy it. I buy mine from an FFL in Jacksonville, FL. He regularly sells his ammo on www.sigforum.com. I have his email if interested.

I chose Ranger-T because it has some of the best real world statistics. Not some test in a lab with ballistic gelatin, but police and armed citizens putting bad-guys down. I use the 127gr +P+ load in my 9mm (that and the 147gr load are about equals), and the 165gr load in my .40.

Ranger-T is Black Talon, improved and renamed, sans the black coating.

I have 16 Black Talon cartridges in my possession for pure "neato" factor. They look cool.

I believe it started with doctors. Doctors were having problems with the bullet jacket cutting their gloves as they were extracting them from people in the ER. This lead to crazy rumors that Black Talon had razor sharp claws that spun in flight to greatly enhance their damage and wounding capability. All a bunch of crap really. The "teflon" rumors is also true, in that people bought into it about penetrating armor. Too bad Teflon actually INHIBITS soft armor penetration, but that's just needless facts to get in the way. Haven't heard of the racially charged one, but I wouldn't doubt it.

OMG !!! In that case, I think I still have about 15 boxes of COP KILLER TEFLON BULLETS ... hope the "Hydra" computer program is not listening ... :) ... AW smiles, smilin' all the way if the MAN is listening.

Fly ... that's right -- now I remember stories of doctors whining about "cuts" --- had forgotten that one. And my Mother wanted me to be a doctor ..... Thanks for the link ... I'll try some boxes of it.

*edit* wait, that's not a link --- please PM me his email address. Thanks.

I think you may have some problems wiht hollow points in your 1911. I have the black stainless-same weapon a few more bells and whistles on mine but it was a group purchase with the Infantry battalion I was in Iraq with so we went big.

I had some trouble firing HPs. Mostly federal Hydra shocks.

Yeah, 1911s, at least in "stock" configs, aren't known for their JHP loading characteristics. My SIG sits night-stand watch anyway.

right now my Springfield XD-9 sits night stnad watch. Im looking for the spring guide laser sight because it looks cool. For anyone not familiar it is a laser sight that tkaes the place of the spring guide so ti doesnt change teh profile of the weapon at all for holsters etc. Might be a nice toy not that I really need it but I bet it could help to difuse a situation quick.

Most of the time, a polishing of the feed ramp will cure a 1911's JHP blues. You have to remember, it was designed when there was no such thing as JHPs, so it works just fine with 230gr ball. I've been curious to try the Federal EFMJ's in mine. They are slightly more rounded, yet still offer good expansion.

When it all comes down to it Im guessing .45 ball is just as good as 9mm JHP.
Some friends in another squadron all got Colt .45 revolvers made, they had the squadron patch on one faux ivorty handle and the shoulder patch on the other. The serial number was the squadron number dash rocket number-For those not familiar Marine skids use rocket numbers vice side or schedule numbers, every time I sign for a bird I am (insert squadron callsign here) 38, went back to late viet nam so the FACs knew who could shoot close and who couldnt kind of a cool tradition. When in theater we jsut sue the ATO numbers like everyone else
