Trying to decide if I should fly or drive from Jacksonville. Does any one have any advice on if its better to have a car up there or not? Also is anyone is looking to car pool from Jax Fl let me know. I heard around week 3 or so we start to get liberty given back to us in NSI, any one have any advice from the most recent group on how it went up there?

I figure if i go anywhere like boston or something or just out in town ill just walk or something. i know a few guys going to war college up there right now. i know a few people on here are driving their cars, i havent heard anything about parking though.

Good luck walking to Boston! Haha. Seriously though, I'm sure there will be plenty of people up there with their own vehicles that you will become friends with and won't "need" your own vehicle. However, if you want to be making the decisions on where you go and when while on liberty it's nice having your own car. Another thing to consider: Your car will sit for about 3 weeks in a parking lot right next to the water with the wind blowing salt spray on it. You'll want wash it ASAP (undercarriage included) to prevent rust, etc.

I'm still debating on whether or not to fly or drive. If you are definitely going to drive let me know and I might be interested in carpooling. I'm in Kings Bay, GA (about half hour to 45 minutes north of JAX). Give me a call at (954)834-3877 if you want to discuss it. If I don't pick up leave me a message with your number. I might be down on the boat and I can't bring my camera phone on the submarine so I won't have it on me.

Anyone pick up as an alternate one year and selected the next? How did you change you Personal Statement? What if you think your CO's endorsement was last year AMAZING and you don't want to change much?

I guess my real question is... how much did you change your second package? Do you think they look at last years, or they have the same board members?

My career history is the same, and if i had a good thing last year i don't want to 'improve' upon it too much just because.

    advice please!

I was an alternate my first year applying then got selected my next. I changed my personal statement and mentioned that I was an alternate from last year and that it made me even more determined to make it as an officer. 90% of my statement was left unchanged. I worked a little harder to get my PFA scores up from a good low/good medium to a good high. I kept taking classes but didn't retake the SAT. I also added a LOR from my former CO whom signed my first application. My new CO had only taken over two months before my second package was due and I felt that his recommendation, while good, was not as genuine lets say, as what my former CO could and did provide.

Most importantly, I kept performing my job to the best of my abilities.

For the guys/gals who are just went through NSI in the FEB 2010 class up, did they have you get or bring the NWU. I am just trying to figure out if I should bring that uniform or just leave it. I figure at the NROTC unit I won't get much use out of it.

    Hey Jake,
Im bringing mine, i was told that if you had them, bring them. they are currently in the process of the transition and trying to implement it. im with you that the ROTC units wont be using them, i already had 2 pairs of my NWU's sewn up for NSI and ill do the 3rd pair this week. have you decided to drive up or are you flying? If you are on the water front this week look me up, this is my last week at TRF Friday is my last day. See ya

I just printed up the new "Required Items to Bring" list and noticed that, on the bottom it says:

_ Personnel with poly/wool khaki's or NWU's should bring them, otherwise they will be required to purchase them during uniform issue.

The NSI Uniform Issue PDF still says that the NWUs aren't required so I don't know if it just hasn't been updated... the Required Items list was updated in February so I will definitely be bringing whatever I have...

I am getting pretty apprehensive right about now, trying to get everything together is pretty crazy. I have decided that I am going to bring the basic required items and use this opportunity to replace my NWU's if we have to. I thought about bringing my old ones but I have had them for so long and I would rather have all new uniforms to start out with. Will anyone be there on the 15th? I have to check off of leave that day so I figured I will be kicking around Newport for the weekend. If you are and you happen to get bored call me at 480-239-5727 (my name is Randy). Good luck to everyone getting up there safe and enjoy your last few days of freedom, see you guys there.

I had sent an email earlier to Mr. Straten about this. He said that the new selection board will not look at your last package and that they may or may not know you were selected the previous year. He recommended that you make sure you mention it in your personnel statement and have your CO mention it in thier endorsement letter.

I'll be flying in Sunday the 16th getting there about 1700 if anyone wants to split a cab. Looking forward to getting there and getting started with everything. From anyone from the Feb class, whats the gouge on getting out of there towards the end for a weekend? My wife's tentatively scheduling to be induced with our second child on June 25th. Just curious if I'll be able to make it. Also anyone know if we need to take our navy sweatpants and hoodie (the bootcamp ones) I heard they wore them in the Feb class that first week until uniform issue, but with it being summer not sure if we're even going to need them. I lost mine a long time ago, so I would have to go buy some more if needed. Good luck to everyone getting up there, see you guys Sunday.

So i'm reading the new instructions and see the part about Assignment to a university under General information (e.) and it looks like my first choice of school can be trumped by the "Needs of the Navy" does that mean if it costs too much to move my family cross country that the Navy won't if they can keep me in the same city? What if i don't get into the other two schools i put down as my secondary schools?

I am afraid that I won't be placed in my first choice of school... my grades were so bad i don't think i can get into the others. I am working my butt off on new classes but i really want to go to The Citadel.

Please give me some advice, can i expect to go to my first choice of school even if it is 2,000 miles away?

As long as there is space available at the school you'll be able to go wherever it is you want to go. I've yet to hear of anyone who hasn't gotten their school of choice. But of course it's all dependent on if you get accepted to said school but The Citadel is good about getting STA-21 guys quick and easy acceptance.

Hey guys, I figure this is the right place to ask. I am enlisting right now, going in as a nuke. My goal however is to be a pilot. My plan is to apply to sta21 as soon as possible. Do any of you have any tips or things I should look at to make my package stand out more?
