@RedFive i know this is a cop out, but you have to visit lemoore for at least 24 hours to know what we’re talking about. Our text descriptions are not doing it justice (that goes for the base and the town). And if you are comparing San Diego and north island to Lemoore, then you are so far out of your element it isn’t even funny.

I mean jesus, your Navy Lodge is like a resort and you have more than zero golf courses.

@RedFive ...

I got a good laugh out of your post.

AC in Lemoore isn't a convenience, it's practically a survival system from April to October. When your CO limits working hours because the AC is out in the hangar and he doesn't want people to physically collapse, you know you've got a problem. Life in SD is expensive? I feel so badly for you- how many fun things could you plan for tonight to take your mind off it? The night-life and things to do in San Diego are amazing. Yes, its expensive (housing and taxes are off-puttingly so), but you have PLENTY of compensations. So many that I'm getting jealous, just writing this.

Hahahha, I have no doubt that you're right. I'm just saying some of the things he listed are ubiquitous. A lot of our hangars were built in the 30s and rather than fix them, they have netting on the ceiling to prevent shit from falling on people/aircraft. The Navy SUCKS at infrastructure. I was at Beale recently and the air quality was terrible. Not sure how similar it is to Lemoore, but I feel for you guys. And I listened to this Air Force guy tell me how terrible his squadron's facilities were and when I walked in I wanted to bitch slap him.

You bet, brother. The next time I get a hall pass from ops and COMCINCHOUSE for a weekend XC, I'm there!

...as long as you don't mind partying with a dirty hinge, that is... ;)

Don't feel bad, we're not allowed to do XCs either! One year we didn't even have enough flight hours to go to the Miramar Air Show!!#!$!@$ Something about sequestration. Supposedly there was a time in Naval Aviation history when you could fill a helo up with your buddies, fly to vegas, get blasted, and have one "DD" pilot to fly home while everyone else is teetering on the verge of death.

You think this is different at North Island?! Having had a SO who ran ASD, I can assure you we have a hell of time getting parts and keeping aircraft up. There are parts for our helos that the Army gets priority for in the contract!

Welcome to every base anywhere.

My property taxes just went up $200/month. I don't see the Navy fixing that for me soon, either.

Yup, I pay SDG&E almost $300/month. That's just one of my utilities.

Have you seen 32nd Street???? Or North Island when the CVNs are home? When your CO adjusts the working hours to accommodate for shit traffic, there's a problem.

YOU GUYS HAVE AC?????? WTF

Not saying I would ever trade NZY for NLC, but you're listing a lot of general gripes pilots could complain about at any NAS. But yeah, you guys should kick the ANG out of Mugu and move there. That is one hell of a sleepy base.

Just curiosity from a guy who does Surface to Air ops out of Mugu...would it be that much better to move VFA to Mugu? I mean you have proximity to the SOCAL OPAREAs but the local test range OPAREA gets pretty tied up doing “other” stuff.

Also, Lemoore and Iraq look very similar from the air...
Somewhere in the Navy website photo gallery is a picture of my squadron flying home from workups in division. We'd just gotten gas from our Super Hornet bros in the Lemoore AR track, and were pushing home to Whidbey. Some poor know-nothing MC captioned the photo with words to the effect of "VAQ-1XX flies in formation over Afghanistan."

Moral of the story? Lemoore has been legitimately confused with Afghanistan before. :D

Having spent a few years each in Oceana, Lemoore, and now San Diego, I can tell you with certainty that the VFA community would not have a manning issue if it was based at Miramar instead of Lemoore. Hell, I’d rather live in El Centro than Lemoore again. At least there they have a BevMo and a Best Buy, and SD is only about an hour away.

And for the record, Lemoore has more training range options, but they all suck for training quality. Oceana has less options but having surface to infinity over the water is much better training.

Did I mention BAH is twice as much in SD? I took a pay cut to move to Lemoore from Oceana, and then got a fat raise moving to SD.

Even if he did, what do you really think he would or could do. He would pontificate and tell everyone how concerned he was about it all and that he is looking in to fixing things. And in the end? Nothing changes. Don’t fool yourselves.

I grew up in Porterville, CA. Fuck Lemoore, Fuck California, no thanks. Can’t get my mom to leave Oildale (the shitty part of Bakersfield) so I occasionally have to visit.

I don’t get how people can, in good conscience, raise children there, if they have the means to leave.
