In my day, the E-2 could be on scene commander. In fact, it was the preferred OSC. That still notional? Barring that, they are the perfect comm relay and anti cluster fvck machine. And yes, they keep an eye on the air to air picture if there is a airborne threat.

Over to the Hummer bubbas.

Pretty much. CSAR control is essentially strike control, depending on the threat picture. C2, comms relay, air control. The E-2 is good for SAR because we have long endurance, lots of radios, and we're good at moving airplanes around.

We can provide command and control for both Personnel Recovery and CSAR missions. Like Uncle Fester said, we have a ton of radios (to communicate with assets as well as act as a comm relay platform) and the ability to manage a 360 degree picture. Closely related to this is our ability to also help with natural disaster scenarios.

And still, the A-7 dudes always thought they were the cats meow when it came to OSC. Except that one time for reals when CAG jumped into my wingman's war hoover.

Thanks everyone! Is CSAR a common mission for the E-2 or not so much? Also, excuse my ignorant question, but does the E-2 operate with other branches (AF Pararescue, Amry MEDEVAC) during CSAR?

It's something E-2 NFOs train for, one mission of many.

There are many different kinds of "CSAR", with different players depending on the scenario. And that's probably all that should be discussed here on NIPR AirWarriors.
