DSN Morale Lines

I am looking for a list or directory of DSN morale lines.
These are the numbers you can call from overseas DSN and use to switch to a local number for free.
I know the morale line number for my own base, but am looking for a list to use to call family and friends.
One of the guys in my last squadron used to have a huge list, so I know it is out there somewhere on the internet but I can't find it. Between that and Skype, we did not pay for any phone calls, so I would love to find it again.
Thanks in advance!

I've always just called the duty office and had the ASDO transfer me to a local number. In this age of cell phones, it can be an issue if you get transferred to a long distance number and then the squadron gets hit with a big long distance bill.

Legend has it that a squadron (purported to be my previous command) got stuck with a huge long distance bill. Turns out that convincts from a local jail had figured out if they called the ASDO and said they were "Chief So-and-so" and asked to be transferred, they could make long distance calls at no cost to themselves.

Now why does the government pay a per call long distance charge? No one else with any sense does nowadays.

That said, we did have a list of base telephone operators that we called via DSN from overseas, and to my knowledge they all required that the call be transferred to somewhere in the same area code. If your family lived away from a base, you were SOL. I don't have a copy of said list, unfortunately, but it does exist. I've seen it. Perhaps an S-6 product?

My personal policy is to transfer callers to a base duty office with the same area code. We don't get dinged for a long distance and they still (hopefully) get connected. 2 minutes on google and I can usually find a DSN that'll get them close to who they wanna talk to.

Such a list exists. It was sent out not long ago to all IA's. I'll look at work tomorrow and see if I still have it.

Heynowlookout, or anyone else, if you have it and can post it or PM it to me, that would be awesome! I know you can use the base operators at some bases, but I would love to see what is out there in terms of automated switches, because some places give you a hard time or take awhile to connect to the correct person. Any info is appreciated!

How about you call home at a reasonable frequency (I.E., not twice per day), and you use Skype, or a calling card or international plan like the rest of humanity. Seriously, international rates are pretty affordable these days. Stop mooching off of Uncle Sam.

Wow. You're pretty much mainlining the Kool Aid now, aren't you?

So, am I a bad person for calling my wife on her government provided cell phone via a DSN Morale Line twice a week? Maybe I should not get married. That's the solution to all the problems, isn't it?

Skype? What the fuck is that? Have you BEEN on a boat, or do you only know the life as a shore based guy?

Oh, and before you tell me how fucked up I am - realize that my wife and I have spent more time in theater than you have...

Unfortunately you're victim of my email quota being exceeded and me dumping my deleted items folder the day before. I'll ask a couple people to see if they kept it.

I hope this was said in jest. Mooching off uncle sam? He's already getting 8-9 months of my life per deployment, I think I can justify using him to occasionally talk to my family. And maybe international rates are pretty affordable these days, but my mandatory 300$/month contribution to the wardroom for my "special food" really cuts into my international calling plan budget.

Stop mooching off of Uncle Sam.
If they're morale lines, haven't they been established for the sole purpose of, you know, providing morale? Is it really mooching if you're using them for their intended purpose?

I'd better stop using the Base gym's equipment too, don't want to be mooching off of The Man's exercise equipment.

I'm not saying that nobody should use the morale lines, but they shouldn't be your primary plan for maintaining comms. They get abused a lot, so simmer down. Not a "shore-based" guy, so you must be thinking of someone else. Going on my ninth deployment next week, 5th in the AOR, so let's not go down the "time in theater" dick measuring contest just yet.

So wait a minute, Skype works for Navy guys on boat? I know that the bandwidth the Marines have on board a big deck is fast enough to make dial up look blisteringly fast. Plus, the USMC domain on the boat blocks every IM program out there.

It wasn't intended as a dick measuring contest... I was worn out from re-doing the counters, and a couple beers in me and felt like getting you riled up! ;)
