So wait a minute, Skype works for Navy guys on boat? I know that the bandwidth the Marines have on board a big deck is fast enough to make dial up look blisteringly fast.

Nawwww, big deck bandwidth is almost as fast as dailup if you get on during quarters/officer call. :)

It wasn't intended as a dick measuring contest... I was worn out from re-doing the counters, and a couple beers in me and felt like getting you riled up! ;)

No problem, brother. No Skype on the boat, but it works great when you pull in to port.

Sorry, Brett, I was under the misconception that phone numbers like the morale line were switches provided for the purpose of calling in from DSN and switching over to a local number, and so it was OK to use them for that.
Even when I have paid calling card rates, you still have to use the morale line to switch over to the 1-800 number in order to use the calling card. How would you make and pay for international calls on a DSN line without using a switch? The money is not the issue. I am not talking about being on the boat - I am talking about being in theater where commercial phones are not readily available.
Nowhere did I say I was going to be making calls a certain number of times per day or using anything as a primary means of communication. I was just looking for some information that someone else might have. Why post in this thread just to tell me how wrong you think I am?

I think SOMEBODY has to switch you over to the regular phone network. Some of the morale lines are automated now. Lejuene's is, for example. Oddly enough, if someone ever finds the "list," the base operators at Ft Hood were the most helpful people in the world when I called from a scratchy ship's phone line trying to get transferred.

When I was deployed, my wife was a local call from my home base, so I used the MAG duty or one of the other squadron ODO lines to get transferred out in town. For any other family, I used a free line at the USO or a AT&T calling card. There are so many free options to call home, you can easily work the system to not overuse the DSN line or have to pay out of pocket. Every deployment has had so many free AT&T calling cards handed out I wasn't able to use them all up. They were right up there with melted chocolate and baby wipes, more available than you could ever use.

Anyone have an automated morale line number for the Hampton Roads area? I called most of the 757 area code numbers on the previously posted list with no joy.

Try the general base operator number. They'll generally hook you up.

I was just overseas last month myself and was using that same list. It sucks, most of the numbers I tried I got no answer. Ended up calling the command I work for and having a buddy connect me.

I have an old gouge card, so not sure if this works, but base ops at Oceana was 433-2162 and Langley was 574-2504. Chances are base ops is manned and will be open when you are trying to call home. Check the IFR Supp for more numbers.

Also, if you are trying to call somebody not local to a base, the Bethesda operator will connect you long distance.

Yeah, but at the end of the day, the duty office answers, hears a word or two if they're lucky, go WTF?, and hang up.
