Depth perception mega thread

I used to have problems with that test (the five circles), and generally had to "re-do" at least a couple of the lines. Then I found that if I looked "past" the circles, I was able to pick out the correct one all the time. Didn't have any problems with it the last several physicals I took.

I'm applying for SNA and NFO and I'm a little confused about astigmatism requirements. I called my eye doctor a few days ago and he said my astigmatic correction is 0 on the cylinder and -1.5 for the astigmatism. I'm not sure what all this means. I've seen that you can have an astigmatic correction no greater than -1.0, if I saw correctly. This may be a stupid question, but is -1.5 considered greater than -1.0?

Charity -- I printed out the NOMI paperwork and handed it to my eye doc and let them decipher whether or not I was all squared away... before I went to MEPS. I made the mistake of not doing that pre-op (PRK) and freaked myself out when I thought I was not within the pre-op limits AFTER I got the surgery done.

depth perception waiver not accepted

I was pro reced for pilot and nfo in november. I was selected for nfo just had to run the pft. So I ran the PFT the other day and spoke with a processor. He showed me and E-mail from Nami about the depth perception, but it was technical and confusing so I asked him to forward it to me so hopefully Monday so I can post it and see what you guys think. I was pro reced for pilot I just did not pass depth perception at MEPS. It is like a seeing eye book. So I proved I have perfect depth perception and I was not selected. I don't understand is there anyway I can still be a pilot. Is there any way at OCS I can redo the test and switch to pilot. This little technicality is so frustrating is there anything I can do? Although NFO would be sweet Pilot was and is my goal.

If I was told I can get a waiver I just don't understand why they would not accept it.

I would recommend posting your concern in the "DOC's Corner" forum...that way some of the medical dudes can give you some advice. Also, FEDDOC might actually be able to assist you if you PM him.

Good luck in fighting this off.

Getting reevaluated at NAMI for depth perception

I ran a search on depth perception, however I wasnt successful in finding my answer. I am OCS complete and awaiting commissioning, I was NPQd at NAMI for SNA due to depth perception. I wanted to get another opinion and I went to see a civlian doc, and he said i have hypernitropia (spelling?), anyways he said that it is possible to correct it with vision therapy. That is what he said a week ago, and i was seen again today. I have been doing this vision therapy 3x a day and now i can see just about all the little dots on the sterio test. He says that it is working, and I am going again in another week for reexamination. I was talking to my OSA and he said that my corpsman for my district would examine my paperwork and send it down to NAMI and see what they say. Have you all heard of anyone being reexamined at NAMI? Or would they just take the paperwork that I have from my civilian doctor and say I am good to go?

Thanks

I highly doubt they would take just your civilian doctor's word. The best you can hope for is that they take a look at what he had to say and give you another test. I think your best bet is to ask that question of the physical standards folks.

I also have trouble with my depth perception. I failed the test at MEPS the first go around, and barely passed when they let me re-test. But now I'm curious if I really do have a problem or if it was just the test. I mean I can do the magic eye books no problem that has to account for something right?:icon_tong

I guess it only counts for something if you can retake a depth perception test. I highly doubt also that they would just take my civilian docs "word", I just was asking how many people have been retested down at NAMI.

So I'm worried again about my depth - I busted the MEPS test back in October (as well as distant VA) and had PRK done shortly thereafter to keep my sna slot. Well, I'm coming up on my 6 months post-op, so I can get a civilian doc to test my depth now and he pegged me at 50 arc second circles using the randot booklet.
My q: is there any leniancy in the 40 arc second circles as listed in the waiver guide? I'm hoping to get into another doc to take the Verhoeff test soon but I've now not passed 2/3 of the depth tests.

There wasn't much leniency when I worked for them.....however, a phone call will certainly clear that up.

Here's another one - took the Randot at my PRK doc's during my 6 month post op, got a note stating that I had 25 seconds of arc and went out the door. Now my OR is saying that it's unacceptable (conflict of interest) and that I have to pass the "navy" depth test, waiver guide be damned. Can one not go to any private doc, pay for the test, get their note and leave? How can I do this so it's not a conflict of interest?
