Thanks @BigRed389 , "and be good at it" (or "good at both") is the phrase I was missing. Agreed about the platforms nowadays being so far ahead of what we had in the 1970s.

If/when a FFG/LCS/DDG/1000/etc uses its aviation resources properly, they can significantly expand their capacity to fight multiple warfare areas at once.
On the other hand, if mom is being hunted by a sub while simultaneously swarmed by FIACs...well...I might be thinking about alternates in the back of my head.
