DCOIC Gouge for those about to commission as a DCO

unbroken

I went in JUL-16, before the NAVADMIN was released. The only folks wearing Type III NWUs in my class were SeaBee Mustangs, and SEALs. They all had rough-out brown/tan boots.

Truly hoping my CO will auth the brown boots at some point. I'm not in any hurry, since I had to buy a second set of aquaflage just to go to school. Plus, I'm actually getting use out of my parka, so I'm content to hold off for a while longer...<lyric>rock it 'til the wheels fall off</lyric>

Since I was the sailor's DIV-O at the time, and it wasn't me, it was either a Chief, or the CO/XO, judging by the direction he was coming from, and his demeanor.

Strange. Yea O's mostly wear khaki's in my unit, so that's what I've been doing. But I will double check with my CO re whether we are authorized to purchase Type IIIs right now. Current fleet-wide status certainly leaves some folks in an odd gray area...I think my CO will likely authorize since a handful of others have already been wearing it and presumably it's authorized for everyone or no one, but better safe than sorry as they say...

I purchased the blueberries. At InDoc this weekend I'd say of those that wore the NWUs there were about 4-5 that wore the Type III. No one from the NOSC wore them though.

Those tan boots look way more comfortable than the black ones. And no polishing!

My black boots don't really feel heavy, but swamp foot is definitely a thing. Plus, would love to have more than two options for footwear. Something I could actually run in would be great.

Another uniform question. It appears my NOSC will transition late to the Type III's. That being said, I hate wasting money. If I understand, I will need 2 pairs of camo for DCO. Is there a problem if I wear the Type III's at DCO, then hang on to them until the NOSC ok's it? Alternatively, if I show up with one Type III and one blueberry, will that be an issue at DCO? Thanks

Type III authority comes from your command, not your NOSC. Some units that drill at my NOSC are authorized to wear them, and others are not. If your unit has been authorized to wear them early, they may be worn.

I would bring a set of whichever is authorized. If the point of wearing the Type IIIs for you is to save money, I don't know why you would then also purchase blueberries as a spare set? If you are going to buy the latter regardless, then wouldn't you just wear those?

Fwiw, you can pick up some pretty cheap, used blueberries online or at army-navy exchange stores.

When are you going to DCOIC?

Agree with @unbroken. Was going to respond earlier, but was driving (safety first!). I would have said to go half-n-half, since my blueberries are slowly being pushed deeper into the closet with each passing month. @Traumac, if you're planning for DCOIC, do you have an operational unit as of yet? It was my understanding that you couldn't submit a TRUIC change until after DCOIC. Did your FINSEL already have you assigned to a unit?

@unbroken what's the PT like? I'm trying to get in shape on the off chance I get selected and I want to make sure I am doing the best types of exercises.

Also, on the knowledge front, I found the attached document online. Do you need to know every word of this information verbatim?

Thanks and congratulations. I am trying to stay sane until the board results in July!

If you can pass a PFA you will be more than fine. Most of us wished we'd had more time to PT there. We PTd maybe 4x total. Granted, weather was truly terrible so our options were limited, but the hardest part was just getting up so early to work out. Be able to run 1.5 miles and do some pushups and situps and that will be sufficient.

You will be tested on your required knowledge during uniform inspections, with people in your face asking you to repeat the Nth General Order, etc. So best to know that gauge beforehand.

Thank you, thank you, thank you...

I'm 41 years old so getting in top shape takes a bit more planning than it used to....

I concur with what @unbroken said. PT isn't difficult and we did it indoors! The only time we did it outside (in the freezing cold) was prior to the moc-PRT. Just listen to the orders, move when told and work as a team.

Gouge you should memorize as much as possible prior to arrival, will save you the added stress of trying to memorize everything while there. And being able to repeat something at you leisure is different than having someone asking you to your face while pointing out all the issues with your uniform.

FYI...Make sure you looking INSIDE your garrison cover for stay threads. That's the only thing I got dinged for!

@ABMD thank you for your information!

I realize my odds of selection and commissioning are slim even if I am qualified. I am keeping expectations as low as possible to not set my self up for the inevitable soul-crushing disappointment of not being selected.

At the same time, I am giving 200% physically and mentally in order to be prepared on day one if I'm fortunate enough to be commissioned. I'm studying the knowledge sheet and working out like crazy 5 days/week. It's surreal to think that 15-18 months of preparing and the next 20 years of my life comes down to a packet of papers sitting in front of a board of strangers!

Thanks again to all for your feedback.
