Custom Painted Flight Jacket: This is what one looks like.

Any idea how the gun-pockets work? I went to Pop's website, and clicked their link, but I still don't think I get it. Sweet jacket btw.

I hardly see how that's relevant. yes

I mean, I posted the reg because that's what she asked about. I don't care if someone has a ton of patches on their leather jacket, I think it looks awesome. But she did ask about the regs.
Because there are regs, and there are regs. Bend a few regarding the leather jacket in the interest of looking cool, and few people wearing brown shoes will care. Gaffing them off completely is a different matter, of course. Welcome to the gray areas of the real world.

Patching up your Nomex is verboten according to "the regs." Fat chance enforcing that. TL;DR, real professionalism is something you know when you see it, and it's not attained by blindly following all regs to the letter without understanding their purpose.

So.... real professionalism is not following rules so that you can look cool?

No, I'm just observing that the flight jacket rules are often bent, and as long as you don't go too crazy about it, like painting a huge set of gold wings on the front, no one is going to care.

Every regulation written in the US military is not necessarily always followed exactly to the letter every time. There are the uniform regs you follow so as not to look like a bag of ass, and there are ones that are collectively ignored. I don't have to encourage it; I've just seen it be the rule, not the exception. Patching up nomex jackets. Wearing leather jackets with relaxed SDBs instead of Ike jackets. Putting an American flag on the shoulder of the leather jacket. All of these things are things I've seen regularly. All are against the uniform regs. Few people care.

If the USNA Supe can do it, I figure it's kosher.

As nittany said, there are regs and there are regs.

My impression was that the regs question was more about the painting vice the source of the coat. Plenty of people wear uniform items from non-NEX sources (abbotts, etc).

The Gun Pockets (one on each side) I got on my Pop's Leather Jacket are a little bigger than the one on my issue jacket. I could probably fit my 1911 into it, but it would look bulky on the outside. The big difference is it is a leather-lined pocket. So it could actually hold the weight. The pocket on my issue coat is lined with Rayon and has the bottom punched through from that one time I put my car-keys in it.

My wife splurged and got me this amazing custom leather coat by Pop's Leather, and had the patches painted directly onto it by a great leather-jacket artist: Dan McQuality. Oh, and we had custom material shipped to Turkey so they could make the liner from a "tropical island print" since my entire career has been served in the tropics/Iraq/hot-fucking-places. Pop's Leather was extremely helpful and easily used our fabric, no extra charge.

I'm posting images here, in case any of you are thinking about getting one of Pop's jackets, or want to see what a painted jacket can look like. I had a LOT of trouble finding detailed photos of Pop's jackets, and what all the options were or how they looked. Photos like these would have made me feel a lot more at ease while ordering. The fur collar is nice, and has been redesigned so it is not so "1970's porno" in size like they used to make. The color of the fur perfectly matches my issue jacket, the leather is superb.

I figured this might help someone out there, even if this isn't your style or you find it gauche. The entire album can be seen at: http://imgur.com/a/6D5qo and anyone can feel free to PM me with questions if they are considering ordering one of their own from Pop's or having Dan do paintwork on a jacket they already have.

Everyone should be able to find a link to Pop's Leather, so I wont include one. The painter, however, is a great veteran who has a shop in Illinois, and his site is: http://www.noseartismypassion.com/ I encourage you to look at his other works (including the one he made for Bush '41).

Here's what the side entry pockets look like, and yes they are mounted at a perfect angle. They feel very natural:

Here's a show of the inside of the jacket, with the zip-out thinsulate liner removed. Shows you where they mount the bloodchit, and where the "Custom made for" patch on the left side of the image gets sewn. Also, you can see the optional interior pen/pencil pockets installed.

Speaking of the zip out liner, here's what it looks like removed. The sleeves zip onto the vest, and then the ends of the sleeves have a button to keep them in place so they don't ride up when installed. Hard to see, but there are access slits so you can still utilize the jacket pockets when the liner is installed:

And here are some close-ups of the detailed patch-painting done by Dan McQuality, just awesome work. He uses a flex-paint and says his jackets he wears have been painted and are chip-free after 20 years:

All right, if people see me as "that guy," then I'm just gonna run with it:
"Patches may be affixed to the CWU-36/P Summer weight jacket either by hook and pile (Velcro) or directly to the jacket at the discretion of the individual, subject to commanding officer guidance. Patches shall not be affixed to the Multi-Climate Shell jacket."
This line is probably where the confusion is coming from. I have no idea what the "Multi-climate Shell Jacket" is, but the other one is the Nomex. Also, this one doesn't have a limit on how many patches like the reg for the leather jacket does.
That said, let me be clear, I completely agree with "there are regs and there are regs."

Good on the OP for posting pics so folks have an idea of what is being offered by Pop's and can decide if it is for them.

That said, IMO, it is hideous. That is some middle of the mall shit right there.
