Coast Guard buying out a ROTC senior?

Hey guys,

I have heard weird stories through different sources of the Coast Guard or someone buying out candidates of ROTC programs. I was selected for Naval Aviator, but was NPQ'd for the smallest thing in my left eye (couldn't read 10 letters straight at 20/40, would get one, ONE wrong). I know I am going to get flak from the forums for this but I was wondering if anyone knows if the Coast Guard would buy out my contract and send me to flight school for them? It has been my dream to always fly SAR in a helo, and being denied aviator from Navy hurt.

Any ideas? Thoughts? Words of Wisdom?

Actually, I understand that. But isn't a forum a great place to get started? To find people who may have ever been in a similar situation?

I believe that is what a forum is, a discussion. Sorry if my question offended you in any way.

Former ROTC guy here, for what it's worth, I've never heard of anything like that.

You say you've heard of "weird stories" regarding your own topic, why don't you summarize those stories for our frame of reference? because after 15+ years I have never ever heard of such a thing for NROTC.

To answer your question, no.

The amount OCS slots for people coming off the street was somewhere around 7, last year. I believe it was around 23 or so the year before. Both of those years 40-50% of the candidates had graduate degrees.

USCG OCS is stupid competitive right now.

I will sell you my post first fleet tour Marine Captain slot. I will give you all uniforms (any tailoring requirements are up to you), necessary books and pubs, and provide tutoring via email and phone for 4 months. You will receive all pay and BAH. I am currently a FAC so a desire to spend some time on the ground is a must. However, I will guarantee you a quick return to the cockpit (at least, that's what the monitor said).

Make me an offer, and NO, I will not provide financing. Oh, and I hope you like fixed wing.

If the Coast Guard uses NAMI to determine their flight standards, then you are SOL.

The Air Force doesn't use NAMI, but you'd have to dig into your specific issue to find out if you'd still be NPQed.

Were you OCS or NROTC? If the latter and you are almost done, finish the program and get your commission. Do your time in another designator and apply for a service transfer to USAF to fly. You won't have any guarantees, but if you've been NPQ'd by NAMI already Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy are pretty much out of the question.

I have not heard of the Coast Guard buying out a ROTC contract; it is very difficult to get into OCS right now, and guessing it would be cheaper to get a college educated guy off the street and train him for 17 weeks, vice getting you. I understand you want to fly SAR - admirable, but we DO use NAMI, so those tests would be on record if you tried to be a puddle pirate.

Best of luck.
