GOUGE CMP M1 Garands - Opportunity

They may be now, but I'm telling you, there is no possible way two of my older ones would have functioned. Unless they dipped the whole rifle back into a vat of Cosmoline after they test fire it.

It would make sense that they are test-fired now, since so many of them are parts guns, and many of the parts are new (specifically the barrels).
I agree - its a fairly recent thing - the test fire/headspace validation.

Additionally, the CMP hasn't always been in the business of re-barreling and putting together Garands out of their parts stock.

Back in the 2011 timeframe, they acquired a metric-ton of drill rifles, which were basically functional Garand parts kits less the welded-up barrels and receivers. They also previously had a pretty big stock of Garand receivers from the batch of returns from Greece circa 2005 that had finish issues and surface pitting, etc.

When the Garand stock started getting thin, they began putting together functional rifles out of all the parts with new barrels (e.g. the CMP Special Grades).

Once they started playing with headspace, they needed to test fire.

Thanks.. But I can’t figure out how to order?
@FrankTheTank its a bit of an ordeal - since the rifle is not shipped through an FFL, rather direct FEDEX to your door.

You will need a copy of your DD-214 and proof of some membership in a shootiung organization - a local club, a national shooting sports association, etc. You probably belong to a qualifying org already.

Its a paper (snail mail/physical mail) ordering process - with a wait time of around 90 days.

Thanks for the video, very informative.
Just received my service grade CMP Springfield Garand. Low serial number produced in Janury 1940. Looked so good I ordered another one.

Copy is just fine - I took an smartphone photo and printed it.
I ended up just calling them and got all the paperwork straightened out.. However, anybody interested in doing this expect watching paint dry to be faster. They are backed up to early March in processing. I sent my paperwork maybe 15/16 April and she said they ain’t even close to that date. And that call was last Monday.

Am I the only one who wonders why some bright spark doesn't start manufacturing brand-new, MIL-SPEC and/or "march grade" M1s? Seems like the market interest would surely be there...like any one of the hundreds of 1911 clones currently available.
