CEC Selection

Hi Everyone,

I currently have a package in for the July 2017 CEC Board. I'm curious if anyone had any opinions on my chances of selection.

-I have a BS in Mechanical Eng (~2.9/4.0 GPA) and a MS in Mechanical Eng (~3.7/4.0 GPA)
-About 2 years experience as a Land Surveyor and 2 years experience as a Mechanical Engineer designing medical devices. This was an internship throughout my master program and I became full time after graduation.
-I have my EIT. I got it in march of 2014.
-I have a total of 5 LOR's. 3 professional (1 from my surveying job and 2 from my current engineering job) and 2 character refs, both from retired Navy CEC Captains.
-I scored a 61 on my OAR
-I have recently submitted a conference paper to an ASME conference which should get published.
-I'm active and workout 2/3 times a week and run 3/4 times a week.

I know I'm not the worst candidate. But I also know that CEC selection is very competitive.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks
-Matt

How did your interview with your Acessions Officer go and what feedback did they give you and/or your recruiter?

I feel it went well. It wasn't my most outstanding interview but I had solid answers for all questions and I came pretty loaded with questions for the AO.

My recruiter called me later that day and told me the AO said it went well. But then he stressed getting as many additional LOR's as possible and preferably from retired CEC Officers, after which I was then able to get 2.

So I'm unsure if he was stressing it because the interview could have gone much better. This is the piece that has me most unsure of my selection.

They told me the same thing about the letters, which you got, so you are good there. Your AO is on the board, so if he/she said the interview went well, that is also good. Your undergrad GPA is a little low, but you have a masters, EIT, and work experience, so that should more than make up for that. I think you have a pretty good shot at getting picked up.

I was picked up by the July board last year and it had a 50% selection rate (9 out of 18). The other boards that year were closer to 30%, about 10 out of 30.

The accessions officer interview is key and like was said above he/she is on the board, well basically all of them all the board, during my time all 3 needed to give a thumbs up for a person to get a "Y", what they would do is all 3 would review individually the applications, then mark he they would give a "Y" to, then they would have a conference call to compare and work out the details.

Between 0-100% is your selection chance.

I'd say you have a pretty decent chance. As mentioned your undergrad GPA is a bit low; hopefully your AO asked about that and your explanation was reasonable. The only other thing that comes to mind is leadership experience, but I understand as a junior engineer that is tough to come by.
