I don't disagree. However, in the interest of full disclosure, I'd caution that zero-calorie artificial food items can have a non-zero effect on metabolism and the gut biome. So it's not just carbs alone. I'd invite anyone to ask his/her most fit, lean, toned friends how often they drink diet sodas.

But here's the real logic: If you are trying to join the Navy but struggling to stay below your max weight, why risk drinking diet sodas and eating junk foods? What's your risk-reward? Even if the science seems inconclusive, why risk it?

There is zero risk to your (notional applicant's) Navy candidacy of drinking a water instead of a diet coke, or eating 2 apples instead of a bag of doritos. (Calories and carbs are equal for those substitution examples, by the way.)

If you are maxing out your PRT and performing at BUD/S level physically, by all means consume whatever you want. This is for those who struggle and don't know what criteria to apply to their diet choices. Cutting artificial ingredients is a quick, easy way to make incremental progress.

I'm not suggesting that people eat junk food, only that your focus on non-caloric "artificial ingredients" is misguided. People are fat because they eat too many of the wrong kind of calories and they don't exercise enough. Yellow dye #5 and MSG has exactly zero to do with any of that. The fact that those two ingredients are found in foods that are bad for you is completely incidental.

I had always thought the same thing but began to wonder if the artificial sweeteners caused the body's insulin levels to react as if it was receiving sugar - and then the miscompare between what the body actually received and what the body thought it received disrupted internal body chemistry. I believe this is what Hair Warrior is alluding to.

Well, and it was the last bullet point out of 5 equally important bullet points. It's not the main factor, clearly.

Also, I said "may want to avoid" not "this will instantly kill you and your children's children." Try eliminating it for a couple weeks. See how you look, feel, perform. Add it back into your diet and see what happens. Adjust as you like. N=1 tinkering is useful.
