BAH while doing OHARP?

Leaving for OCS on Feb 4, so right around the corner. It looks like OHARP is inevitable for SNAs after graduation, so I’m trying to plan accordingly. I was recruited through the St Louis district since that was where my university was, but I live in Chicago with my parents now that I recently graduated. Can I choose to OHARP in Chicago? I have no place to stay in the St. Louis recruiting district.

Also, say I do get OHARP’d in Chicago, will I receive BAH while living with my parents?

When I commissioned back in 2015, you just had to get the recruiting office you wanted to go to sign off saying they will take responsibility over you. Though I'm not sure if its the same now. So i would go ahead and start calling around. In regards to BAH, unfortunately you will not get the BAH for your location. It is some set amount (mine was around $500 or $600). Let me know if you have any other question!

When signing up for BAH too, it also specifically notes you that you can't be "renting" from parents or relatives.

Is it a set amount only while you are enrolled in OHARP?

Did OHARP last summer after OCS. Go talk to Stucon about changing your location. Honestly, they don't care so it shouldn't be an issue where you go. It was a set amount of BAH for me as well.

OHARP is NO-COST TAD. So think of it as free leave IVO your desired leave location.
OHARP returns Navy Officers to their hometown for 14 to 90 days on either permissive no cost temporary additional duty (TAD) orders or while on leave in conjunction with permanent change of station (PCS) orders.
Your BAH is related to where you LIVE...it's either where you came from or where you are going, NOT where you are temporarily assigned.

For those of you that have done OHARP as SNA's post-OCS (in the recent past), how long were you on OHARP before having to report to Pensacola? What was your OHARP like?

There was some confusion about OHARP BAH vs a Stipend during OCS. The final information we got from above was "you get an $800/mo stipend" but I can't seem to find or confirm that anywhere. Who would I call to find out the plain truth?

Tangential to that, do we get BAS regardless? Thanks in advance.

Unless they've changed the rules, OHARP is still NO-COST TAD---NO ADDITIONAL COST TO THE GOVERNMENT. You are still elgible for all normal pay and allowances (BAH, BAS, Base Pay, etc). You might want to see if you can get a reference to said "stipend".

Go ahead and read Enclosure 2 of the BUPERS Instruction. Then tell me what you're entitled to...

My orders do say No-Cost TAD like you remember, and Enclosure 2 states "OHARP volunteers accept the TEMADD or TEMDU assignment with the understanding that they will not be entitled to reimbursement for any travel, transportation, per diem, or miscellaneous expenses connected with this duty per reference (a), 1320-306. If the volunteer elects not to bear this expense, participation in the program must be cancelled by notifying NAVCRUITCOM (N1) prior to the scheduled reporting date." That's basically what it says on my orders.

Enclosure 2 also states "Officer Candidate School (OCS) accessions may participate in OHARP on a TEMDU basis only. Individuals will normally participate upon completion of their OCS training period.", TEMDU being Temporary Duty. Here's where our Class Officers at OCS pointed to concerning BAH/BAS. They said that because it's a Temporary Duty, No-Cost TAD, and not your final destination PCS you get a stipend in place of BAH. That was the final word from our Class Officers. But I can't find anything regarding a stipend in that BUPERS Instruction or in my orders.

Let us know how it works out for you.

For learning purposes: There's a big difference between what you are told to what you are entitled and what you're actually entitled. I always play the "I'm from Missouri: Show me in writing."
