For all the bad press they've received in recent years, this is an impressive website.

http://public.mapper.army.mil/ANC/ANCWeb/PublicWMV/ancWeb.html

Makes it very easy to both revisit history and visit old friends.

Wow! Just wow! I zoomed to my father’s grave in seconds this morning on the website. What’s really neat is that this morning they didn’t have a picture of his tombstone and this afternoon they did! Obviously some people are working very, very hard on updating the website.

This may be a bit random and perhaps a stupid question, but I have perused the website and wanted to make sure all my ducks are in a row. I wanted to visit the ANC during a TDY I-stop in Norfolk. It seems that hours this time of year are 0800-1900, and I plan on going up on a weekend. Is there any issue driving onboard, amended hours for the weekend or any other gotchas that I might run into? I was debating going in uniform, but only plan on bringing a flight suit unless that would be inappropriate. It isn't a family member, if that matters, so has anyone gone recently that might offer some advice to make sure I am doing all the right things?

Recommend taking the Metro, though you can probably find parking on Ft Myer. It's pretty open/informal, so you don't need a uniform unless it's for your own personal reasons. It's a nice place to visit, even if you're not there to visit the departed.

Depending on where you are going another option is parking at Ft Myer, non-DoD folks don't have access so parking usually isn't too much of an issue near the two chapels and they are both adjacent to the cemetery. Entering and exiting the base can be a little challenging though depending on the gate. Definitely no need for a uniform unless you are so inclined, a flight suit would be out of place and possibly not authorized.

I was there last month. There is a visitor parking garage if you want to drive. Also, every Tuesday during the summer, the USMC band and SDT put on a sunset parade at the USMC Memorial. There's shuttle buses from the Arlington visitor center to the parade. It's worth going..............It's like seeing Santa at the North Pole
