Haha. Oh the list of things. Although different flight schools have different rules, ask if you can do some stalls or maybe even a spin. That should give you a good feeling of if you will like the more hectic part of flying. If they won't do that then at least get some steep turns out of it. As for questions, I know this is very general, but I would just ask "why?" There are a lot of procedures/methods that seem weird but totally make sense once you get the "why" behind it. Other than that just have fun catching the flying bug!
For your first flight, the most import thing is to just enjoy the experience man. There will be plenty of time down the road for the more advanced stuff. During my first lesson, my CFI and I just worked on basic stuff such as taxiing, controlling airspeed / altitude, trim, and turns.
I second what KingsburyK said, just enjoy it! If you really want to get a head start on IFS, just work on the basics, such as power management, trim, flying straight and level, coordinated shallow turns, etc. That should give you at least an idea of how the airplane should feel during normal flight. The more you understand and master the basics, the easier the "exciting" stuff will be later on.
I do enjoy them, but after I got my license, I was just excited to be able to actually use the airplane as transportation. I've been flying around a bunch this summer for $100 hamburgers.
man everyone is talking about flying and stuff, makes me feel like I am a little behind the curve. I havent even sat inside a cockpit before. In fact other than a few helo rides on deployment and commercial air travel that is pretty much the extent of my flying experience.
Don't think you'll have a problem, they start everybody out at the beginning again. I've heard that the only thing a civilian pilot's license will help with is the flying sense/feel.
I don't think it really matters at all all as far as how we will do in flight training. IFS will pretty much put us all I'm the same playing field.
Just got the call this morning, FS letter for August 19th SNA!! So you all in Newport and good luck!!
Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'll play it like a first date, ask a lot of questions about "her" and see how far "she" will let me go. Oh, and that first flight came sooner than expected. Lucked out and had a family friend offer to take me up in a 1946 Aeronca Champ. I think this flying business is going to be a long-term thing.
By the way, congrats Joe and good luck! Glad to hear they are doing Aug dates. You're a non-prior right?
Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone who got PRO-REC'ed for SWO on April 27th got their Final Select letter? Good luck to all those who already got an OCS date!
Well this is going to move fast...Just got my OCS date. July 8th!!! haha, my recruiter wants me down to swear in by wednesday so we can get paperwork moving. Question. For those of you who are in the know. What will my recruiter generally be testing me on as far as questions? Ranks and the big 4?
Oh wow, talk about short notice... Congrats though, that's great! I'm not aware of recruiters testing you on those but you definitely want to show up to Newport with those memorized.
Yeah, she gave me a book of different info on the Navy and said to learn it. I've been working through it, but not nearly as hard as if I had known I would get a date this quickly! Just want to prioritize what I need to know.
It sounds like she was just trying to get you ready to go. I got the survivors guide from my recruiter but he never said anything about a test. Congrats and good luck to you.
I'm physically qualified for SNA! This website and the people who helped with my situation are to thank. If not for AirWarriors, I wouldn't have known to challenge the depth perception results I got at MEPS the first time and I would've been steered into NFO (not a bad option, but not my first choice). Members here suggested I see a civilian optometrist to retest my depth perception, and upon passing, submit the results to the Navy. I did that, and although I didn't get a PQ letter right away like some, I got a retest at MEPS. The retest was today. I took the same depth perception test (AFVT), but the results were much better—Pass (F). I was more rested, better hydrated, and the technician gave much better instructions than before. Now, I await FS and OCS date.
Thanks Ben, it's a good guess. Whew, sounds like the date might actually be moved back a few weeks due to paperwork. I'm pretty relieved. Just goes to show though, don't expect to have a lot of advanced notice. Be ready to go now! Congrats matron!
Just got off the phone with my recruiter, FS letter is on the way but I'm slotted for the September 30th OCS class date!
Mataron, glad that everything worked out for you! Guys that are still waiting, your FS will come soon, perhaps sooner than you think. For those who have OCS dates, good luck!
I only have a spoken OCS date so far, and am eargerly awaiting a FS letter. Congrats to all that have received theirs!
I was officially sworn in this morning. Nothing left to do for the next 4 months but PT and study up for OCS.
