Advice if I don't get picked up after first tour?

I really want to go aviation, but my CO is unwilling to give me the recommendation as of right now. I have about a year at my current unit with another year to go till I PCS. My OER was solid, but he said he wasn't willing to give me a recommendation yet. In the event that I don't get selected, what type of unit should I go to to improve my chances? Thanks everyone

I'm not a Coastie, but assuming it works the same as the Navy - isn't the CO obliged to route up any request, regardless of whether he recommends approval or not?

Just stick with it and work closely with your command. You will need that CO recommendation, no doubt, and it needs to find its way into the potential block of your OER.

It doesn't really matter what unit you are at as long as your command gives you a recommendation. I would pick a unit that puts you in a career track that would be something you would enjoy in the event you don't get flight school. Also, normally if you are doing a job you enjoy it will translate to good performance and marks.

In all my years of aviation, I have never met anyone medically qualified that didn't get picked up for flight school that continuously applied every 6 months. I'm sure they are out there, but I've never heard of them. Persistence pays off so apply when you are ready and if you don't get it, KEEP APPLYING!

Hey guys! Just an update. Was counseled on my OER last week by the XO. I volunteered to be the project officer for my CO's change of command and he said "Thanks for offering but if I assign you to it you'll probably leave for flight school in April." Confused, he told me that they were going to recommend me for the board that meets in January. Really been working hard at work and happy that it's paying off. We'll wait to see what this board holds in store...

A transition package needs CO approval, I have known several hopefuls who were stymied by being unable to get their CO's nod.

The flight training selection panel met today. Currently underway and headed back home after a challenging deployment. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping to hear good things within a week or two. I'll let you guys know how it goes
