A-10's For The Marine Corps

Unless it's blue on blue.

Not sure what you mean by "Marine ECAS", but if you meant the A-10, then yes they have more of everything except sensors, speed, and SA (ok......that part was a joke).

The be clear, the A-10 is a fantastic aircraft for the current situation in Iraq. Nearly perfect once they get their JDAM issues ironed out. Even though a lot of its upgrades are bolted on, they still work. They have a new version in the works (A-10C?) that will supposedly integrate most of the functions. I don't know if that will give them the sensor integration of a Harrier with H4.0 or higher, but it might. I would hope so.

My cousin was killed by Blue on Blue in Panama while taking Rio Hata (Spectre), its the cost of closing and destroying brother, God rest his soul. B on B is bad, but not as bad as getting shot off the Objective!

Can I say that I hate the JDAM? Well I should say I hate any bomb over 500lbs. You can drop 500's all day long. 2K? Not so much.

Rest of your post went over my head Sir.

There are 500# JDAM now. GBU-38 and GBU-38V4 (low collateral damage). 1000 pounders too.

JDAM is great, but it isn't perfect. It's a tool like any other. Capabilities and limitations.

Sorry to hear about your cousin, by the way.

Yeah, basing your selection on 1.) where you'll live during training (12 months) and not your fleet tour (quite possibly the better part of your career) and 2.) something that MIGHT happen, have always proven to be viable criteria.

Well, it's not like I woke up today and decided I all of a sudden didn't want to fly jets. It's just been moving toward that point for a long time - this was pretty much the tipping point, and the short answer is always more amusing than the whole story. Besides, since they're all based East/West/Japan, does platform selection have any influence on your fleet tour location? The only thing it'll decide is where (possibly) you'd go to the RAG, and with Ospreys for the near future, East coast since that's who they're staffing first.

LGB is great until you have particulate matter in the air... That's where JDAM comes in. Of course, there's always the 30mm on a linear target. Or 2.75" HE. Weapon to target match will always reign supreme.

Wow - I didn't sound like much of a Phrog guy there... Let me see if I can fix that.

"Flower - can you slide the jet launch, I'm going to be late." ;)

I dont like JDAM and moving tagets dont work so well, great for fixed site kind of stuff. Big fan of Laser Maverick though.

As for A-10s there have been some very high vis blue on blue involving A-10s and Marines I dont know any FACs that would put A-10s in their top 5 or even 10 of what they want coming out to support them.

They have a bad habit of gunning LAVs and AMTRAKs, Desert Storm and OIF.

Personal opinion-The AF still doesnt grasp the fundamental premise of CAS as an organization. Even though we are all joint etc etc etc they dont speak grunt, dont care to learn.
This personal opinion is based on working with F-16s, A-10s, AC-130s and AF instructors at TACP school. Your results may vary but give me someone with anchors on their wings.

Skid,

The best CAS I ever worked was USAF ANG from Indiana, F-16's at that. They were awesome.

I agree completely Navy/MC Air will bust a cap. You can hear it in their check-in, they want to bomb someone... God bless them

No doubt.

I cant speak to the fratricide incidences, I'll take my lumps and keep the hammer coming. It's combat, so long as we're moving forward, Im a happy pedestrian.

At least one of the Indiana ANG guys is a Harrier guy. Maybe that helped.:D

In fact, there are a ton of USMC guys in the ANG. Several of the A-10 guys that rotated through (3 squadrons in 6 months) AA last time we were there were USMC Hornet dudes.

It's all training. The USAF has some top notch pilots. They just spend too much time in the AA master mode, IMHO.
