2018 AMDO Board

Jorge,

For what it is worth, I was selected for DCO AMDO (arguably more competitive than OCS AMDO) as an AWF1 without a Masters. I too had a heavy maintenance background (W/C 13B LPO and FS QAR but no SFF). I submitted 7 packages (including STA-21, Flying CWO, LDO, and DCO) before they got tired of saying “no.” My point is, keep applying for OCS and LDO and working your butt off to get your SFF and SOY. In the end, you’ll either get commissioned, make MCPO, or some combination of both- I was selected for CPO while waiting for the results from my last DCO package. Keep your head up and good luck!
Cricechex thank you for your encouraging words. I will keep trying to get my SFF and will continue pursuing the CPO and officer options. Thank you again!

Disappointed to find out that my package never made it to the board - despite receiving confirmation that it had been received and processed for board consideration. My command is currently looking into how this happened. In the mean time I will be looking forward to Chief board eligible results and the FY 19 AMDO board.

There’s been glitches in the past where documents are uploaded and into “the system”, but the system won’t get that applicant and their information into the board. Happened to a few Pilot/NFO and SWO applicants last year.

I hope your right! That will be amazing if that is the case. If I dont have to reaapply, I woudnt mind waiting to class up even if it is a year or so from now. I think my CoC did talk to the OCM though. I wonder if the info from the CNRC is more accurate than the OCM or maybe its just a mix up of info. Given the gravity of this situation, it might be a good idea to hear it from both of them.
As of right now they are limited on ocs quotas which is hindering everything else unlike the previous years. That does not mean that things wont change in the near future. As an alternate my CO received a message asking for my release date for OCS, so i contacted them and was told that more than likely i would go next year. Now i dont know if it has something to do with me being #2 alternate or if all alternates received that message. But like i said just stay positive because there is hope. Until it is time to start preparing for next years board and you have heard from CNRC and the OCM by then saying to reapply then do so.

By now they now what their quotas are for FY 18, those are set. The FY 19 hard quotas aren't really known until Jan time frame, so often what they do is will select up to 50% of the last years quotas for upcoming FY, that way if there is a change they should be ok whether it is more or less, and then by the time the next board happens they know what they need for current year and have an idea for the next year.

FY 19 for OCS means those people could start going to OCS in July, it just depends on school dates and such.

Slightly discouraged after reading of all your awesome applications and qualifications. I’m only a 4.5 year AZ2 with a BS in Public Management with a concentration of Criminal Justice(3.53/4.00). Taking ASTB on the 22nd of June. Not mention my adventures at Mast a few years ago..

And it will continue to get competitive. Many candidates now have masters degrees and along with LPO/DLCPO experience make them competitive.

Your degree doesn't help much with this situation.

According to my recruiter, this is a job where most of the applicants are AT1's with aviation degrees, with high GPA's, good OAR scores, and have other distinguishable traits. Truthfully, my recruiter suggested I apply for this, but didn't tell me how hard it is to get accepted, which I am glad, because I would have had anxiety waiting to hear if I had to wait another year to apply. My only advice is to fill you resume with as many distinguishable things as possible. You may also want to start on your aviation degree. I think the only thing that got me accepted is my degree from Embry-Riddle, and a good OAR score. I applied as a civilian, so my application is different from yours, but if there is any part of my application you would like to see, like my statement letter, I would be more than happy to share. Also if you need any advice on how to score well on the OAR.

So...yes and no (I know, helpful, right?). Is it competitive? Absolutely. Has been for the last several years. I got picked up on the Feb/Mar 2016 board. I was the #2 alternate (out of 7) and there were 6 selectees. All 13 of us shipped, but the alternates could not ship to a class with a graduation date earlier than 01OCT (alternates there may be hope for you still). What did my package look like? Two bachelors (Poli Sci and History) with a GPA of 2.68, two masters courses (GPA 4.0), prior commissioning program, OAR of 65, reservist AE2 on recruiting duty (one EP, two MP evals), and some time in the Army as a Blackhawk crew chief. Definitely not the flashiest profile, to be sure. In fact, when the Blues were in town, their MO was downright agitated that I was picked up, but his buddy (either a 1st class or a Chief with far more experience than I) was not. Persistence is one part of it - from the time I was dropped from ROTC until I was selected for OCS was about 11 years - with several applications in the meantime. Part of it was the masters work, some of it was the OAR. Personal statements, interview scores, and recommendations are a big part of it too - in short, it's a little bit of everything (again, helpful, right?). The key here is the board has a way of determining if this is something you're just applying for because it sounds like a good deal, or if you really WANT it and are deserving of it. Believe me, in those 11 years there were MANY obstacles - at one point I had a Master Chief tell me he would do everything within his power to get my packet shot down. If you allow the odds and the obstacles to discourage you, then you'll never get there. My motto was: if there is still a chance and I'm not pursuing it, then I never really wanted it to begin with.
