Since it wasn't over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, nor can this debate on who deserves to be national champion end
Now that was an interesting game, to say the least. You could tell from the first play that Ohio St had a huge chip on their shoulder and something to prove.
That was an ugly game. The offense misfired the whole first half and the defense was missing tackles left and right. At least we woke up in the 3rd quarter. Oh well, a win is a win.
The pre-bowl layoff had an obvious effect on our timing. We got better in the 2nd half, but were never on all cylinders. This was Ohio State's best game of the year. If they had played Penn State like that, they would have been in the Rose Bowl. It took a full season for the tOSU coaches to figure out how to use Pryor. He is going to be good, but he has to really improve his throwing. He made good strides in the game management phase, and they subbed Boeckman effectively. Ohio State did a good job of making Texas play Big 10 football for 58 minutes. We did our thing for the last two, and got it done. Great win. Texas is the best team in the country.
It was certainly ugly. Colt was hit so often in the first half that his throws seemed less accurate, and Terrel Pryor has to be the most inaccurate QB that I've seen. Pryor is awful while throwing; couldn't hit anything.
I'd wait until people forget the game Texas just played before saying this... Edit: Something funny about the game was at the end seeing OSU fans' faces after they were so sure they had the BCS "monkey" off their backs. That was indescribable.
Pasty white and slack jawed is now way to go through life. That has been a pretty common pose for Buckeye fan the past few years. Q: What do pancakes and Big 10 teams have in common? A: They are all flat and don't belong in big bowls. I disagree that Texas played a bad game. Our timing was off, and that happens with offenses like this after long layoffs. Ohio State also has one hell of a defense and a damn good running game. This was a tough game match-up wise for Texas, and this was not the same Ohio State team that USC played in So-Cal. They are totally different on offense, and they had Wells for most of the game (until he strained a labia).
I just said that because I, like many, thought it would be a blow out before the game. OSU did play very great on defense. I couldn't find a flaw in their entire defensive game, with the obvious exception of Texas' last play. I don't know what happened on that play as far as if they weren't set up before or what... It appeared that that WR (#6, who had a great(!) game) was only covered over the top by a safety that tried to bite on the ball but ended up not being able to get to the ball or make a tackle. --Before that play, it seemed to me that OSU was going to win; the way their defense was playing, I just didn't expect a quick TD. I stand corrected. -Was a good game.
Please, you were an overly generous spot on 4th and 3 away from losing to those pasty white slackjawed pancakes.
Time to get HD, douchebag. After that play, I turned to my wife and said that this would be the one that every Ohio State fan would use as their excuse for losing the game. Every angle showed that the ball was clearly over the 40 yard line. They had 3 shots of it. He was over the 40 when he caught it, was pushed back, and then stretched back over the 40. Not only did he make the yardage needed, he did it twice. Every announcer except for Eddie George said that the call was clearly correct, and that includeds the Big East replay official. You were a bullshit PI call away from losing by double digits, so take your Vince Young starter kit back to Ohio and enjoy playing in the MAC, I mean Big 10. It's hard to tell the difference. FWIW, for those who think that Texas did not play a good game on offense, here are the stats for the game compared to what Ohio State had given up for the year: The season statistics are first, Texas' numbers in () Ohio State, total defense Yards: 280 (486) Yards per play: 4.42 (5.6) Points: 13.1 (24) Pass defense Yards per game: 164 (414) Yards per attempt: 5.2 (7) Run defense yards per game: 115 (72) yards per attempt: 3.7 (5.2) This was a one sided game made close because Texas' timing was off early. If they play this game 10 times, Texas wins all 10 and 6 of them would be by 3 TD's or more.
I think it is hard to say the game was one sided given the final score and what it took for Texas to win. Is 6-3 at half one sided? Now you could make that argument for the third quarter given that Texas kicked our ass then, but the Buckeyes owned the fourth quarter right up until the last drive. Nonetheless, I am glad that the game was not a blowout. The seniors came out and played a great game against a team that everyone thought would steamroll to a victory. Frankly, that was the best game of the bowl season, and that is all that really matters at this point.
If you guys aren't doing anything on the 8th of January...feel free and watch the varsity play. That is, if you aren't doing anything better of course.
I didn't get to watch the whole thing, just the first half, but I'd agree about the timing thing. Run and gun offenses need a lot of work, and while practice is good, tuning works best in games. The second half looked lopsided stats-wise but looking at the score it didn't look lopsided. If Texas owned them that much in terms of yardage they had issues of putting the ball in the endzone. 414 thru the air and only 2 touchdowns isn't really dominating the game. I wasn't pulling for either team, just wanted to see a good game, so good on Texas for pulling it out. The only b.s. thing I saw was the personal foul for helmet to helmet against #90 on Ohio State in the first half. That was clearly in his shoulder, and that kept the drive going that Colt scored on. The replay of the 4th and 3 was clearly a first down.
Colt threw for 414 and 2 TD's. He also ran one in. We have not been big on "style points" all year, just pretty good at winning games. I think that it says a lot that we can match up with and beat a power running/play action pass/dominant defense team like Ohio State, AND a shotgun spread team like OU in the same season, both on neutral fields. All of the talk shows are comparing Texas' win over tOSU with USC's game with them. Problem is that they were not even close to being the same team. USC got tOSU at home, with Wells out for the entire game, in Pryor's 2nd college game. Ohio State was a lot better on a neutral filed in January with their best player healthy than they were on the road in September with their best player in street clothes. The announcers totally F'd up what was called on that penalty by #90. They kept saying how the official thought he saw helmet to helmet contact. That's not what was called. The ref said "illegal contact to the head", because for the second time in the drive the guy came in late and punched Colt in the helmet. It was late, and it was dirty. Both times.
Are you talking about the same announcers who all agreed that the "Bullshit PI call" was absolutely correct? How can you say that you win that game 10/10 times? Both of your 3rd quarter scoring drives were kept alive by penalties and 4th down conversions? That and the fact that our defense was so gassed because Beanie was out for the 2nd half (not your fault but still lucky for you) and we pulled two 3and outs. I will say that going to the hurry up was good coaching on Texas' part after seeing that he was hurt. I wouldn't really say you matched up well against a power running game, we just lost our running back. If he was in for the second half Texas would have gotten upset. Its not really a good excuse though because he has shown himself to be pretty injury prone but you have to be crazy to actually believe you win 10/10 times.
Or you just have to have been paying attention to how Ohio State has preformed in big games for the past 3 years. If this game was in early December (with no layoff) you get the full dose of our in-sync offense and we drop 40+ on you. Our defense was not the only one that was gassed in the 4th quarter.
Big games like the two 1 v 2 games we won in 06? Or Texas yesterday? And you cant seriously criticize OSU for not showing up in those two national championships and then complain about the layoff. Go ahead and look at the lengths of our layoffs between Michigan and the BCS games weve played. (Hint: its 2 weeks longer than yours)
I totally agree with the first hit being dirty but I reran the second hit on dvr several times, and to me, his helmet clearly went into the shoulder pad and the hands didn't really hit the helmet. That said, I think the ref was hot on the whistle because of how cheap of a shot the first time was. I watched the rest of the game today and it looked like #90 was intentionally trying to hurt McCoy throughout the game.
I dunno man, I would've actually liked to have seen OSU get that monkey off their back but damn if they didn't suck it up again. Three times is the start of a trend.
What about losing 5 major bowl games in a row? Opps, I mean 4 in a row... for now. :icon_wink I can't wait to see the game, but I also want to see the new and improved OU excuse-book quotes.
It's getting pretty thick at this point. The one they used in Dallas was because they had a linebacker go down with a knee injury. Well, Bob, if you get your starters out when you have a 40 point lead and get the backups some playing time, you can build some depth and not be totally fucked when one guy goes down. People are already starting to wonder how a guy who goes by "Big Game Bob" has lost 3 of 4 to Texas and 4 straight BCS games.
